Job Description Position: Medical Assistant/LPN - Reports To: Clinical Manager
Overview: Manage and coordinate functions of the Medical Care throughout SOSI. This includes, but is not limited to: nursing tasks, patient registration, check in and check out; preparation for clinic encompassing preparing paperwork and organizing any needed documents; handling of all phone calls/correspondence; addressing patients' needs promptly and accurately; training medical staff; assisting other departments as necessary. An understanding of contemporary medical assisting principles and skills must be demonstrated, unique to their clinical assignment.
Duties:
Provide patient care responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to: conducting patient assessments, administering treatment and medications, performing diagnostic tests, and arranging patient follow-up.
Organizing patient flow.
Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room.
Assist patients with changing to exam gowns, and transfer to exam table if needed.
Ability to assist with cast and splint application and removal.
Fit patients with braces, boots, other DME as ordered by Provider.
Wound dressing changes.
Prepare injections.
Suture and staple removal.
Sterile tray set-ups.
Obtain lab/x-ray reports.
Schedule provider appointments, MRI, CT scans, labs, and other tests.
Provide basic patient care as ordered by providers, assist with various procedures.
Obtain proper insurance authorization for ordered procedures.
Provides patient education materials, communicates provider advice/instructions to patient.
Respond promptly and appropriately to inquiries and requests from patients, staff and providers.
Maintains an awareness of clinic flow and patient status. Problem solves and prevents issues by appropriately communicating and providing exceptional customer service to patients.
Records medical history and symptoms, completing documentation in the medical record.
Coordinates patient care, acting as a liaison with other organizations.
Provides patient education before and after procedures, use of medical devices and equipment, and prescriptions.
Consistently demonstrates correct handling of procedure specimens per Provider orders, including appropriate identification, labeling, dating and disposition of the specimen.
Coordinate PTO and other leave/absences with Clinical Manager (ensure nursing services are adequately covered).
Coordinate with Clinical Manager and providers on all responsibilities and duties.
Answer questions and assist Clinical Manager in resolving patient complaints or other issues.
Give direction regarding patients with immediate appointment needs for providers
Communicates test results and instructions to patients per practice protocol.
Utilize appropriate nursing technology for efficiency.
Monitor phone system/activity to ensure constant coverage, support optimal phone call response, and appropriately intervene when needed.
Discuss clinical performance issues in a timely and constructive manner.
Assist in annual reviews for all nursing staff in coordination with Clinical Manager.
Work with the Clinical Manager regarding evaluations, disciplinary actions, nursing operation redesign, and training for nursing staff.
Audit and identify medical procedures that are inefficient and work with Clinical Manager to implement corrective measures.
Interact effectively with front desk, nursing, providers, billing and Clinical Manager to ensure consistency and accuracy of duties (i.e. nursing tasks, collection of coding and insurance information, handling of patient PHI, and preparation for clinic) is completed by staff.
Act as a liaison to ensure provider, patient and nursing needs are met (nursing, procedural and communication of issues/needs).
Coordinate and utilize staff to support other departments.
Assist with any needed task as assigned.
Participate in meetings, committees, and other assigned tasks.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OIG, Safety, Compliance and other office policies.
Assists in development of effective workflows, policies and procedures that support best practice operations.
Input necessary data to the practice management system and electronic medical record program (insurance information, demographics, required meaningful use data, etc.)
Schedule and reschedule appointments per provider protocols.
Greet patients/public in a professional, polite, respectful manner and provide necessary information.
Follow SOSI telephone operation protocols to ensuring accurate information to callers, forward calls to the correct department, and take messages when necessary.
Respond to messages in a timely manner.
Maintain an awareness of the clinical environment and provide prompt assistance for patient needs.
Other duties/tasks may be assigned at the discretion of management.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:
High School Diploma Required.
Graduate of a Medical Assistant - MA Program.(RMA Registered Medical Assistant/CMA Certified Medical Assistant Preferred)
Associates Degree is preferred.
Maintain a valid Driver's License.
Maintain current CPR Certification.
A minimum of 2 years' experience in an orthopaedic or hospital setting is preferred.

Flexible and able to deal with a constantly changing environment and associated demands.
Possess excellent customer service skills.
Knowledge and experience with Electronic Medical Record Systems, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word required.
Experience with insurance companies, referrals and authorizations is required.
Excellent organizational and ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
Ability to make decisions and problem solve.
Ability to supervise clinical procedures and maintain a high quality clinical operations.
