If you have read my Job Descriptions before, welcome back. If you have not, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tom Welke. I have been recruiting technical talent for over 22 years and been in the tech sector since the 1990's.
I like to add a little humor to job descriptions as well...so, if you see something in here that makes you chuckle, that was the intent.
Social fit is almost as important as technical fit for this role. So, what creates a good social fit? Well...I am glad you asked. Here are some of those characteristics of a good social fit here:
- This is an environment with limited egos and limited drama. So, if you are the kind of person that believes the world revolves around you, please go back to being an Instagram Influencer...because you wont be a fit here.
- This is an environment where that 'attention to detail' is important. I know...many of you have seen 'attention to detail' in job descriptions and you kind of gloss over the point (I would too). However, this role really does require someone to think things through and know how action A affects system B.
- If you have a better idea to solve a problem or issue, it is perfectly ok to say so...even to other C or VP level execs in the firm... This is not an organization 'set in its ways'...so, if you have a better idea, please speak up.
This role IS being done 95% remotely (there will be 5% travel to Elkart, Indiana). However, we are really only looking to work with candidates in the US Central Time Zone. In addition, I can only work with US Citizens or Green Card Holders. I cannot work with OPT, EAD, H1 Visa Holders, or anyone else that is not a US Citizen or Green Card Holder.
Here is what we are seeking for this role:
We are seeking a full stack Business Intelligence Developer / lead. This role will focus on everything from the requirements and documentation phase (including interpretation of those requirements and coming up with better ideas to do things), so if you have some of those nifty BA skills, that will work well for this role. If you have built DWs from scratch (cube building and so on), SSIS, SSAS, and PowerBI would be great to see in your background as well. If you specialize in one of these areas (for example, the presentation layer...PowerBI and SSRS), that would be fine for this role as well. So, what I am trying to say, is that we are flexible in terms of where your skills 'sit'...weather it be in the data, ETL or presentation layer.
Those key analytical skills are just as important as the ‘technical’ skills. This is that role for the 'thinker' as opposed to the 'do-er'. Most people reading this (if I haven't bored you to tears yet) realize the difference. Do-er's are great...you can give them a task and they get that task done. The 'thinker' (what we are seeking here), is the person that can think 'hmmm..if we do this this way...oh oh, Marketing will go ballistic...so, we probably shouldn't do that (well, unless you like seeing people go a little nuts)'. Those analytical skills include fun stuff like ‘lets look at what problem are we trying to solve, and work backward from there’, and not looking at everything as a nail because all you have is a hammer. So, mixing some of those nifty BA skills along with the technical side of Sql are really keys to success in this role.
For this role, the things we are really looking for are:
- Full stack BI development experience would be great to see in your background..everything from the E part of ETL through the T and L and all the way through the presentation layer (in other words, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS and PowerBI). However, if you have specialized in one of these areas and have exposure to the rest, that would work as well.
- Duration on your assignments...we are seeking individuals that have consistently spent 2-3 years on the roles you have held. Everyone has a bad 'fit' now and again, so that is fine if you have a role or two that was shorter in duration.
- Cube Building, Data Mart building, Data Modeling and dimensional modeling experience if you have it.
- Experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF), Azure Sql and Azure Synapse.
- Experience with Power View, Power Query if you have it.
