About the Role:
The Sr. High Voltage Cable Design Engineer will play a pivotal role in the design and analysis of components, assemblies, and subassemblies for underground HV/EHV transmission cable systems. You will produce associated drawings and instructions and provide technical leadership to the High Voltage cable engineering team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will independently execute complex engineering assignments, leveraging your expertise in electrical engineering and high-voltage equipment to drive cost-effective solutions. Additionally, you'll champion initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and elevate customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with customers to identify technical specifications and documentation requirements for integrating our products into their applications.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, production specifications, schedules, and contract modifications to ensure alignment with customer technical requirements.
- Develop application notes that guide customers on the effective use of our products within their target applications.
- Create and oversee test applications for modules, including customer-specific components.
- Design comprehensive cable system solutions, including accessories, link boxes, fiber optic components, grounding details, and bonding schemes for voltage classes ranging from 69kV to 500kV.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in analyzing the electro-mechanical behavior of HV/EHV cable systems, supporting both installation and in-field applications.
- Lead the development of specifications, proposals, licensing and safety documents, working closely with the Sales & Marketing and Project Management teams to secure necessary approvals.
- Support manufacturing processes throughout the production cycle.
- Act as a principal investigator or lead a team of engineers in diagnosing problems, developing solutions, and preparing detailed recommendations and reports.
- Manage Research & Development projects, including planning, timeline forecasting, budget management, and logistics coordination using the "Stage Gate" process.
- Represent the HV engineering group at meetings and conferences, providing training seminars to customers, resolving complex technical issues, and developing action plans.
- Deliver formal technical presentations to customers, industry forums, and conferences.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers in their projects and calculations.
- Champion workplace and project site safety, adhering to the company’s Culture of ZERO.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of experience.
Required Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of underground power transmission engineering and related disciplines for effective problem-solving and coordination.
- Proficiency with ICEA, AEIC, IEC, and IEEE standards, as well as thermal, mechanical, and electrical field calculations.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Expertise in software such as Cymcap, Comsol Multiphysics, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Matlab, PSCAD, Pull Planner, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- In-depth understanding of the power transmission cable industry and markets.
- Strong working knowledge of cable materials and testing processes.
- Proficiency in Visual Basic and similar programming languages for coding spreadsheets and macros in Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Skills:
- High Voltage Design Experience.
- Ability to complete Cable Design Solutions with grounding details and bonding schemes.
- Exceptional communication skills and client interaction abilities.
- Proficiency in delivering formal technical presentations to customers.
