McLean is looking for an experienced Superintendent to join our team in the Chesapeake, VA area.
Superintendents have profit/loss and overall responsibility for the project, or for areas or disciplines on the project, to which they are assigned and have extensive knowledge and experience in the marine/heavy/civil construction industry. They collaborate with other Field Supervisors daily and have overall responsibility for directing the execution of construction work through the field supervisors that report to them. Superintendents hold other Field Supervisors accountable for the safe, efficient, and timely execution of the construction project to which they are assigned. They work in tandem with Project Managers, Project Superintendents, the Construction Manager, Equipment Managers, Safety Personnel, Engineers, and other Field Supervisors to ensure projects are completed successfully, safely, on time, and on budget. Superintendents actively participate in means and methods, safety planning, project scheduling and budgeting in the construction and pre-construction phases and are responsible for ensuring equipment is used appropriately and properly cared for. They review purchase orders and subcontracts, actively manage the budget, especially as it pertains to labor and equipment costs, and ensure adequate levels of labor and equipment resources are maintained on their projects by communicating the needs of the project to Construction Managers with sufficient lead time. At times, they may function as the Company’s primary point of contact when communicating, negotiating or trouble-shooting contractual, commercial, or technical issues with the Owner or Subcontractors. Superintendents work closely with Project Superintendents, Project Managers, and the Construction Manager to coordinate and develop the careers of field supervisors on their projects.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Actively manages project personnel and the layout, function, and appearance of the project sites.
Coordinates with field supervisors to optimize project operations and ensures projects are built in conformance with contract requirements.
Demonstrates ability to retain, mentor, and advance field supervisors and their crew members and coaches others to do the same.
Integrates safety rules, policies, and practices in all work elements.
Studies specifications to plan procedures for construction on the basis of starting and completing projects in a timely and safe manner, with the staffing and equipment requirements as needed.
Assembles members of the Company work force (Engineers, Foremen, and Craftsmen) to start the project.
Possesses an advanced understanding of CPM schedules.
Confers with and directs Supervisory personnel as well as subcontractors engaged in the planning and execution of work on/for the project.
Engages in construction planning, means and methods evaluations, project scheduling, material procurement, subcontractor management, change order identification, quality control, and job site safety.
Monitors safety, schedule and cost, and makes necessary adjustments to operations in support of established goals, budgets, and contract requirements.
Possesses basic knowledge of cost and revenue projection process.
Takes direction from Project Superintendents and Project Managers to ensure proper management of subcontractors and vendor material deliveries.
Regularly interfaces with Construction Manager to coordinate equipment and human resources for assigned project.
Confers with supervisory and engineering personnel, inspectors, and material suppliers to resolve construction problems.
Inspects work in progress to ensure the work conforms to the specifications and the construction schedules are followed.
Possesses capability to read, review, and interpret procedures, drawings, manuals, specifications, etc.
Coordinates the various phases of construction to prevent delays.
Identifies extra work situations and provides timely notice to the Project Superintendent and/or Project Manager.
Monitors progress and cost reports and adjusts schedules as indicated by those reports.
Ensures the preparation of final field records for the project, including as-built documents.
Maintains an extensive knowledge of relevant equipment, materials, and means and methods.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job position involves direct supervision of personnel and carries supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience
Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management not required, but is a plus. Five (5) years or more of related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 1-3 years in the construction of Bridge/Heavy Highway/Marine Construction. Minimum of 1-3 years of management experience. Experience in cost and schedule control.
Other Skills and Abilities
Must be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation to work and able to pass a physical. Must be able to pass a Homeland Security background check to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
