Crew Carbon Overview
We are a venture-backed, early-stage company developed at Yale University, commercializing research conducted by Prof. Noah Planavsky and Dr. Joachim Katchinoff to utilize key biogeochemical reactions to make positive climate impact while making wastewater treatment more effective. We use our patented technology to enhance the natural power of minerals to help treat wastewater and store carbon dioxide permanently using a low-cost solution combined with best-in-class monitoring and modeling for the robust quantification of CO2 removed. Our approach can provide millions of dollars in chemical cost savings, new revenue streams, and significant climate impact to the wastewater sector. CREW is currently deployed in the US and Germany, with new projects launching across the world.
We are funded by Counteract, ReGen, Ponderosa, Connecticut Innovations and others. We've secured large contracts with the premier buyers of carbon credits through the Frontier Climate Fund (Stripe, Shopify, Autodesk, McKinsey, among others) and have been selected by the Department of Energy as one of the few potential suppliers of high-quality carbon credits to the federal government.
About the Role
As a Senior Modeler/Data Scientist, you will play a crucial role in developing and applying dynamic and mechanistic biogeochemical models to predict weathering rates and track the fate of weathering products in river and ocean systems. Your work will help advance CREW Carbon’s innovative technology and support our mission of large-scale carbon dioxide removal.
Biogeochemical Modeling:
- Develop and implement dynamic and mechanistic biogeochemical models using Python, R, MATLAB, and other coding languages.
- Predict weathering rates of various minerals and track the fate of weathering products in river and ocean systems while modeling biogeochemical interactions (e.g., carbonic acid system dynamics, air-gas exchange, nitrification, bioflocculation, etc.).
- Use and refine existing dynamic river network models and ocean models (e.g., cGENIE, ROMS) to monitor storage of stored CO2 in rivers and oceans.
- Leverage large datasets and apply machine learning techniques to enhance the predictive capabilities of geochemical models.
- Collaborate with the research and engineering teams to integrate geochemical models into CREW’s technology platform.
- Analyze and interpret model results to inform strategic decision-making and technology development.
Data Analysis and Integration:
- Collect and analyze geochemical, hydrological, and environmental data to support model development and validation.
- Integrate field and laboratory data into geochemical models to improve accuracy and reliability.
- Work with data scientists and engineers to enhance data processing and analysis workflows.
Research and Development:
- Conduct literature reviews and stay updated on the latest advancements in geochemical modeling, carbon cycle, geochemical kinetics, and oceanography.
- Identify and propose new modeling approaches and techniques to enhance CREW’s technology.
- Collaborate with academic and industry partners on research projects and publications.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and scientific publications to communicate model results and findings.
- Document modeling methodologies, assumptions, and results for internal and external stakeholders.
- Present findings at industry conferences, meetings, and workshops.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong background in geochemistry, computational modeling, environmental science, or a related field.
- Proven experience in geochemical modeling and simulation using Python, MATLAB, R, or similar coding languages.
- Familiarity with hydrological and oceanographic modeling techniques and programs, such as ROMS, cGENIE, Geochemist’s Workbench, PHREEQC, SUMO.
- Strong understanding of the carbon cycle, geochemical kinetics, and oceanography.
- Experience with machine learning techniques and leveraging large datasets for predictive modeling.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing startup environment where priorities can shift on a monthly basis.
- You practice extreme ownership (no task is too small).
- You love being in the trenches with your team and working with high empathy.
- You have a growth mindset.
Location
CREW has offices and labs in New Haven, CT and offices in Brooklyn, NY. The ideal candidate will be in-person, though there is an option available for remote/hybrid work as needed.
Why Work At Crew Carbon?
- According to recent research, the global water and wastewater treatment market size was valued at $323+ billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $617+ billion by 2032; North America dominated the water and wastewater treatment market with a market share of 38.67% in 2023.
- According to McKinsey & Company, the carbon removal (CDR) market could become a trillion-dollar industry, potentially reaching up to $1.2 trillion by 2050, highlighting the significant economic opportunities within this emerging sector.
- We utilize the extensive infrastructure present in wastewater treatment systems to provide robust, empirical, and durable carbon dioxide removal through enhanced weathering, while delivering process benefits to our partners; our process was patented while at Yale University, with patents granted by the US Patent Office and global filings already in place.
- We have assembled a team of experts in climate and wastewater, and we are supported by expert partners (Pacific Northwest National Labs, Department of Energy, Carbon to Sea Initiative, Yale University)
- We have completed a successful pilot and have built many thousands of tons of CDR capacity, with several new deployments coming online in Q32024
