Position Summary
Under the general supervision from the Research Safety Operations Manager at the UCLA Office of Environment, Health & Safety, the Hazardous Materials Waste Program Manager (HW Manager) will serve as the division subject matter expert for hazardous waste operations and manage campus Hazardous Materials Waste Program.
Major duties include but not limited to:
-Providing direct supervision of EHS Technician staff -Provision of technical support, and management of the campus hazardous waste operations which includes the collection, transportation, bulking, packaging, processing, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.
-Serve as the liaison to coordinate operations of the Household Hazardous Waste Program (a partnership with the City of LA) as well as the Building Manager and Emergency Coordinator for the Environment, Heath & Safety Services Building (ESB)
-Oversee the daily operations of the EXB, ensures compliance including reporting requirements with applicable CDPH, DTSC, DOT, EPA, CUPA and OSHA regulations
-Provide technical guidance and direction to technician staff, Facility Management and Capital Programs project managers and the campus community
-Carry out assigned projects pertaining to waste minimization programs, sustainability programs and other special projects
Type of Supervision:
-Maintain a lead role in UCLA EH&S Hazardous Materials Response Team
-Expected to work independently and exercise judgement in prioritizing assignments with overall direction from the Research Safety Operations Manager

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
3+ Years of experience in planning, developing and managing a large quantity generator hazardous waste program and 90 day waste accumulation facility. (Required) And Experience supervising technical staff. (Required) And Expert knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry, hazardous materials, the toxicity of hazardous materials, hazard classifications and chemical incompatibilities, chemical handling and chemical personal protective clothing. (Required) Ability to interact on a professional level with members of the UCLA research community. (Required) Expert knowledge of government laws and regulations pertaining to the management of hazardous waste and hazardous materials. Knowledge of MSDS systems. (Required) Ability to wear respiratory equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus, and other types of personal protective equipment. Ability to respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials. (Required) Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. This includes the ability to convey technical information, orally and in writing, to trained and untrained personnel regarding safety and handling practices. (Required) Ability to supervise other Environment, Health and Safety staff in operations. (Required) Ability to work independently and prioritize work tasks. (Required) Skill in working as a part of a team, collaborating with others, and interacting diplomatically with all levels of university personnel. (Required) Must be willing to work with and respond to emergencies, some possibly during off hours. (Required) Demonstrated ability to be flexible in an environment of continually changing priorities. (Required) Ability to lift 50 pounds and manipulate a 55 gallon drum weighing up to 300 pounds with assistance. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
Bachelor's Degree Environmental Health, Environmental Sciences of closely related field required or an equivalent combination of the education and relevant experience (Required) Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) (Required)

Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination. Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
