Johnson & Johnson, Robotics and Digital Solutions (RAD) group is recruiting for a Senior Layout Engineer located in Santa Clara, CA.
The Hardware Team in the RAD group is a diverse group of highly motivated, world-class engineers developing next-generation, groundbreaking robotic platforms. Please join our team and contribute to the success of our mission.
Overview:
The RAD team is seeking a highly motivated self-starter who is passionate about designing electronics systems and mixed-signal printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) and ensuring robust, reliable design through quality.
We are looking for a skilled and expert Board Layout Engineer to support and lead all aspects of PCB layout design, component placement, constraint management, and the integrity of signals and traces within Altium Designer. The candidate will have a strong background in multilayer complex PCB designs and 8-10 years of hands-on experience in layout engineering. This mid-level engineering role requires a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, EMC, and electrical performance, as well as physical system-level integration constraints.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and lead complex PCB layouts for multilayer boards using Altium Designer, ensuring alignment to design specifications and industry standards (UL, European regulations, IPC specifications, etc.).
- Optimize component layout and placement to meet performance, manufacturability, and cost-efficiency requirements.
- Perform design rule checks (DRC) and electrical rule checks (ERC) to ensure PCB designs are error-free and align with project requirements.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to address signal integrity issues and implement vital design changes.
- Generate and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including schematics, layout files, and assembly drawings.
- Work closely with hardware engineers, electrical engineers, and other team members to integrate design changes and address signal integrity and layout-related issues.
- Identify and implement design improvements to improve performance, reduce size, or lower manufacturing costs.
- Create or validate component footprints (land patterns) in accordance with industry standards.
- Contribute to PCB/PCBA design evaluations by offering DFM/DFA/DFT and related details.
- Show dedication, a strong sense of importance, and concentration on accurate priorities in every PCB design.
- Mentor other internal layout resources related to PCB layout and provide mentorship on standard methodologies using Altium.
Qualifications
Required:
- Degree in Engineering or other STEM field or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of professional experience in PCB design and consideration for layout, routing, timing constraints, DFM, DFA, and DFT constraints.
- Advanced skills in PCB layouts using Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or Mentor Graphics.
- Strong understanding of layout design principles, including signal integrity, EMI/RFI control, and constraint management.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work optimally within a team environment.
Preferred:
- Altium Designer expertise with a focus on medical devices or other regulated industries.
- Expertise in design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles.
- Demonstrated experience in PCB simulation tools.
- Familiarity with medical device industry standards and regulations, including FDA guidelines, IEC 60601 and ISO 13485.
- Experience with creating and maintaining detailed design documentation and design history files (DHF) in compliance with medical device regulations.
- Extensive experience or certifications with high-density and high-reliability PCB designs specific to medical devices.
Perks
- Flexible Vacation!
- Culture of Respect, Innovation & Inclusion!
- 401k, pension, medical, dental, and vision plans!
- Paid parental leave!
- Benefit Hub discounts, discounts on insurance, and more!
Business hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
