Job Summary:
The Manufacturing Engineer will provide engineering support and continuous improvement for new and existing optics component products. The job will create, review, and update manufacturing processes and methods and initiate and implement process improvements and cost reductions. The position will also develop and maintain production related documentation and develop cost estimates and estimating methodologies.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide strong hands on manufacturing and engineering process support for Optical fabrication and Coating areas as required.
- Operate and troubleshoot all machines / processes within Diamond Turning, CNC and Conventional Optics areas.
- Design tooling and fixturing to support manufacturing as required.
- Utilize various metrology equipment to evaluate components and process performance.
- Lead and support projects to ensure they meet performance, schedule, and cost requirements.
- Investigate production related failures and provide corrective actions.
- Initiate / lead process improvement projects.
- Perform process testing, data analysis / review, root cause analysis, writing procedures and/or test plans as needed.
- Focus of activities will involve scrap reduction, efficiency improvement, cost reduction, implementation of LEAN principles and others.
- Provide support for other departments, as required, to ensure manufacturing requirements have been met.
- Timely communication with Department and Engineering Manager to resolve maintenance and/or production issues in a timely manner.
- Maintain proper communication with production staff as required.
Job Qualifications:
- B.S in Mechanical or Optical Engineering strongly preferred.
- 1 - 5 years of related engineering or optics experience strongly preferred.
- LEAN training/certification a plus.
- Strong demonstrated experience in continual process improvements, focused on improving product quality, production effectiveness, and cost reduction.
- Knowledge of various software programs including Solidworks, MasterCAM, and MS Office Suite preferred.
- First-hand knowledge of all major fabrication methods such as diamond turning, conventional grinding and polishing, CNC grinding and polishing preferred.
- Experience with metrology associated with the manufacture of spherical, aspheric, flat and beam-splitter type of component designs made from glass, IR crystals, metals and dielectrics preferred.
- Knowledge of optics QA and mil-specs preferred.
