OverviewBarnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for clinical deterioration. Progressive care, with lower nurse patient ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment and specialized monitoring.
The unit cares for pre and postoperative neurosurgical, neuro-medicine and stroke patients with complex needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse and patient care techs. Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are standard for all PCU patients. Many resources are available to nurses on this unit, including: Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Mananger, Assistant Nurse Managers and a Nurse Educator. Additionally this nursing team collaborates with and are supported by a wide array of the multidisciplinary providers, physicians and pharmacists.
A specialized orientation is provided to prepare nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training specific to Progressive Care. Ongoing education and professional development is supported and encouraged.
Attention to nursing patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives the work on this unit.
Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose
The Graduate Nurse provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care after completing a nursing program and before licensure. Will be required to obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation from an accredited school of nursing to remain employed in a HSO in the state of Missouri.
Responsibilities
Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
