Primary Function:
Under the direction of the Principal and supervision of the special education teacher, assists in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Helps special education teachers provide for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education settings. Assists with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Upholding Policies & Rules: Enforces school rules, administrative regulations, and state/local board policies.
- Student Assistance: Provides personalized care and assistance to students with physical disabilities, including wheelchair transfers, feeding, hygiene, and bathroom needs.
- Behavioral Support: Implements behavior intervention plans and manages student behavior, including crisis intervention and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior when necessary.
- Individualized Learning: Adapts to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs, supporting both individuals and small groups.
- Supervision & Safety: Supervises students throughout the school day in various settings such as hallways, lunchroom, playground, and during bus duty.
- Teacher Collaboration: Assists teachers in preparing instructional materials, setting up classroom displays, maintaining a neat and orderly environment, and managing student data and reports.
- Confidentiality & Ethics: Maintains a high level of confidentiality and ethical behavior regarding student information, acting as a role model for all district staff.
- IEP Support: Assists in carrying out activities and interventions as described in the student's IEP under the classroom teacher’s supervision.
- Professional Development: Actively participates in staff development programs, faculty meetings, and school events.
Knowledge & Abilities:
- Proficient in operating general office equipment and computer software.
- Strong understanding of student privacy laws, including FERPA, and knowledge of district and department policies.
- Effective in both oral and written communication, with excellent data collection, organization, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates tact, patience, and courtesy while interacting with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, develop plans, analyze situations, and meet tight schedules.
- Capable of working with students with mild to moderate learning and physical disabilities, as well as severe emotional disabilities.
Education & Certifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. At least 48 college hours or successful completion of Paraprofessional Certification Training or similarly approved program/course.
- Certification: Educational Aide Certificate I, II, or III (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Working Conditions:
- Mental Demands: Self-motivated and able to perform tasks independently with frequent interruptions. Manages multiple projects concurrently while maintaining emotional control under stress.
- Physical Demands: Capable of lifting and carrying 15-44 pounds. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and reaching. Proficient in repetitive hand motions and prolonged computer use. Comfortable with district-wide/state-wide travel, irregular hours, and prolonged periods of work.

- Crisis Intervention: Certified or able to pass the physical restraint certification and crisis intervention prevention training.
