SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the dry dock activities.
Essential job duties and purpose include:
- Provides needed expertise in the dry-docking and undocking of vessels.
- Supervises the operations of the Dock Department.
- Oversees maintenance programs on the dry docks.
- Maintains Alabama Shipyard and departmental policies.
- Oversees preventative maintenance programs on the dry docks.
- Maintains a safe working environment for all employees.
- Oversees the dock department budget.
- Conducts ship handling services for incline and dock trials.
- Determines safe mooring locations for vessels and performs heavy weather mooring calculations for all vessels moored in the shipyard.
Requirements
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- High School graduate or equivalent. Formal schooling in mathematics with the ability to perform ship stability calculations. BS Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering desirable.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate the following:
- Experience in at least 10 dockings or undockings in the same type of dry docks.
- Proficient in the use of AutoCAD.
- Ship handling skills required.
- Excellent command of the English language, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of:
- NAVSEA MIL-STD 1625D and Naval Ship Technical Manual Requirements
- Familiarity with ship repair specifications, and ability to read blueprints
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have the physical ability to walk and climb around ships. Must be physically able to commute to various areas in the shipyard.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke.
- Must be able to spend up to 70% of the time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates
Working Relationships:
- Reports to General Manager.
- Supervises the Assistant Dockmaster and dock department.
- Schedules all ship movements, dockings, and undockings.
- Works closely with Project Teams.
- Schedules tugs and pilots for all ship movement activities.
- Contact ship owners or representatives to acquire docking information.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for effective/efficient and safe accomplishment of all tasks assigned to the area of responsibility.

HSEQ Roles and Responsibilities include the following:
- Take an active role in compliance with Alabama Shipyard’s HSEQ Management System.
- Actively participates in the HSEQ Meetings, Job Safety & Environmental Analysis (JSEAs), Work Observations, and Hazard Recognitions processes.
- May assist supervisor in carrying out equipment HSEQ inspections.
- Must report all incidents, including Near Miss incidents, to the Supervisor immediately.
- Maintain all safety training.
- Must abide by any/all local, state, and federal regulations and to company policy.
- Support and participate in the organization’s Continual Improvement Program to conform to ISO 9001:2015 requirements by complying with the HSEQ Policy and procedures and meeting HSEQ objectives.
- Understand the implications of not conforming to the HSEQ Management System requirements and not fulfilling the organization’s compliance obligations.
- Understand appropriate actions to remove themselves from work situations that they consider present an imminent and serious danger to their life or health, as well as the arrangements for protecting them from undue consequences for doing so.
