Job Overview
- As a Safety Specialist, you will assist the Safety and Health Manager with the implementation of policies and programs necessary to fully comply with client Safety Programs and objectives.
- The Safety Specialist will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, and visitors.
- This position is responsible for implementing and maintaining safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- The Safety Specialist will work closely with various departments to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Program Development: Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Risk Assessments: Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify potential safety issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Training and Education: Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors including “train the trainer” sessions to promote awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Incident Investigation: Provide expertise and participate in Safety and Health incident investigations as necessary to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant agencies. Lakeland is a PSM regulated facility and must have PSM qualifications and knowledge as this will be owned by this SH&E group.
- Evaluate compliance with PPE requirements, check on contractor training and review safety paperwork (hot work permits, confined space permits, daily checklists, etc.). Act as Safety Liaison to Engineering and Maintenance to track and follow up on completion of New Equipment Checklists and support the site Safety Initiatives associated with contractors.
- Safety Audits: Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and work practices to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Emergency Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans and coordinate drills to ensure preparedness for potential emergencies.
- Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, training, inspections, and compliance activities. Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.
- Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement safety improvements and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, Business Degree with focus on Safety and Health Administration or a related field. Relevant certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH) are a plus.
- Experience: 2+ years’ of experience in a safety specialist role, preferably in the manufacturing, chemical, or related industry.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, standards, and best practices. Familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulatory agencies.
- Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
