As a Manufacturing/Process Engineer specializing in overmolding at Tempel, you will play a crucial role in optimizing overmolding processes and materials to enhance product quality, performance, and reliability. Reporting directly to the Director of Tool Engineering, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to develop and implement innovative solutions that meet customer requirements and drive operational excellence in the overmolding department.
This role has the flexibility to work remotely if the candidate is willing to travel to Chicago 1-2 times a month.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to develop and optimize overmolding processes for electrical steel laminations, ensuring compatibility with various substrates and achieving desired mechanical and electrical properties.
- Assist in the selection and qualification of overmolding materials, including thermoplastics, thermosets, and elastomers, conducting material characterization, and testing to evaluate performance and suitability for specific applications.
- Support the design and development of overmolding tooling and fixtures, working closely with tooling engineers to optimize mold design, cavity geometry, and process parameters for maximum efficiency and quality.
- Conduct process validation and optimization activities, including DOE (Design of Experiments) studies, process capability analysis, and root cause analysis, to identify opportunities for improvement and enhance process robustness.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting expertise to production teams, assisting in the resolution of process-related issues, quality deviations, and non-conformances in the overmolding department.
- Act as a subject matter expert capable of assisting customers with design and engineering concerns on overmolding projects
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in materials engineering, process engineering, or a related field, with a focus on overmolding processes and materials.
- Solid understanding of overmolding principles, including material selection, mold design, injection molding processes, and process optimization techniques.
- Knowledge of thermoplastic and thermoset materials, including their properties, processing characteristics, and performance considerations in overmolding applications.
- Proficiency in CAD software and simulation tools for mold design and analysis is advantageous.
