Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA) is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Research Engineer to join us, ideally in early October 2024.

The primary responsibilities of this role include handling routine laboratory synthesis and analyses, conducting investigations, and summarizing/compiling findings. The position requires contributing to the publication and presentation of results, as well as engaging in collaborative research both within and outside Toyota.
The position is currently on a one-year renewable basis, with the anticipation of a total of 2+ years of research opportunities.
Work Location
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Ann Arbor Michigan.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare nanomaterials, including nanostructured textiles (as described in this publication, https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2020/ta/d0ta07707k), using electrospinning and sputtering techniques. Modify surfaces through wet chemical methods, perform characterizations using FESEM, XPS, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy, and fabricate small electrochemical devices/sensors.
• Measure their device/sensor performance.
• Regularly report and present to the research team and managements.
• Tight collaboration with colleagues with different expertise.
Minimum requirement
• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a related technical field.
• Experience with analytical tools such as FESEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM.
• Experience in the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials and knowledge of the safe operation of related tools.
• Proficiency in using graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator, as well as data analysis and visualization software such as Igor or Origin.
Desired Attributes
• Experience with CAD and MEMS, including clean room operations. Experience in electrochemical catalysis research, such as CO oxidation, CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR), hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Experience with various types of biosensors, including enzyme-based biosensors, electrochemical biosensors, immunosensors, and others.
• A passion for contributing/writing research papers.
