Job Description Nurse Informatics Specialist
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Under the supervision of the IT Director, the Nurse Informatics Specialist (NIS) is responsible for the implementation, training and maintenance of all Meditech clinical modules as well as coordination with non-clinical modules. Maintains and updates all user access for Meditech. The NIS is responsible for implementation of projects and processes to successfully meet Meaningful Use including ePrescribe and Patient Portal. Responsibilities may also include pulling reports, collecting data and analyzing information as directed by the IT Director.
The NIS projects a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of patients, coworkers, and facility information and adhering to the HIPAA policy. The position reports, in good faith, any known or suspected activity that appears to violate laws, rules, regulations or the SP Code of Conduct. The NIS fulfills annual training modules continuing education requirements and all mandatory requirements.

Patient Population:
The patient population served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital is a minimum of 12 years and/or of adult stature to geriatric patients requiring or seeking pain and/or surgical intervention.
Physical Requirements:
Should use assistive devices when weight being lifted exceeds 35lbs or when required to push/pull more than 58lbs. (OSHA)
Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or armamentarium is essential to performing assigned duties. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well-lit. May be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions needed to be taken is essential. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to the requirements of the job.
OSHA Exposure Classification:
Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which standard precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn. Qualifications:
- Is aware of professional standards, Joint Commission Standards, Federal and State regulations and performs in accordance with them.
- Graduate of approved school of professional nursing with current and valid licensure with State Board of Nursing as a registered nurse.
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing required
- Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Knowledge of at least one module in Meditech required, preferably PCS or ORM
- 2-4 years experience working with clinical information systems including electronic health record support
- 3 or more years of hospital work experience required, preferably in order entry and clinical documentation
- Knowledge of State, Federal and Accrediting Body regulations and standards related to healthcare.
- Ability to relate and work effectively with others.
- Strong written and verbal skills
- Demonstrates ability to comprehend written and oral instructions.
- Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for his/her own professional advancement and that of others.
- Must be computer literate with basic fundamental computer skills that are required to perform essential job related duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
PEOPLE
- Maintains appropriate working relationships with the Governing Board, Medical Staff, Departmental leaders, corporate and clinical staff, patients and family members.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills with staff, management, physicians, patients and family.
- Demonstrates skills as a team player.
- Provides direct patient care in clinical areas as needed and demonstrates necessary clinical competence as necessary.
- Effectively accesses Surgery Partner Service area resources and implements recommendations.
- Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot and resolve software and hardware problems to ensure patient care.
- Participates in staff meetings for department and facility at regular intervals for informative and educational purposes to build appropriate communication and effective team environment.
- Facilities and coordinates the orientation process and in-services as needed for employees.
- Evaluate existing systems and make recommendations to improve functionality.

QUALITY
- Executes day-to-day responsibilities
- Assures that systems are in place to comply with State, Federal, and/or accrediting body.
- Assists with the delivery of quality clinical care through participation in Surgery Partners benchmarking programs.
- Under the direction of the IT Director to assure facility clinical policies and procedures are appropriate and meet standards.
- Assures patient safety, through qualified staff, continuing education of personnel, equipment and overall physical plant safety.
- Assists with the review and approves performance improvement initiatives.
- Assures that contracted clinical services are in compliance with governmental and regulatory bodies.
- Assists facility clinical operations in compliance with regulatory agencies established standards. Maintains the oversight that all required data is entered accurately and timely for all regulatory agencies.

- Accreditation status, Medicare certification and licensure
- Monthly environment of care/safety reports
- Monitor monthly PI data and monitor data entry by all departments, Prepare reports as required.
- Timeliness of data submission to meet SP risk management and quality improvement initiatives
- Oversee the on-going Joint Commission accreditation process and maintain the facility in a state of readiness.
FINANCE
- Balances the amount of consultant hours/travel with needs of facility
- Participates and assists with implementation of cost saving initiatives for the department.
- Communicates ideas for cost containment and reducing expense.

GROWTH
- Provides in-services and training for staff in regard to Meditech
- Pursues additional training and education as needed.
- Attends any staff meetings and training sessions related to the position.

- Fulfills annual training modules and continuing education requirements.
