Position Title: Database Administrator (DBA) - Sybase
Location: On-site (2 days/week) in Lansing, MI
Employment Type: Contract with potential for full-time employment
Work Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday, with on-call rotation (Saturday morning to Monday morning)
Pay: $45-55/hr
About the Position:
Brooksource are seeking a skilled and dedicated Database Administrator (DBA) to join the team at our local government client. As a DBA on this team, you will be supporting their Sybase environment, and they prepare to migrate to a pure SQL Server. The Sybase environment is 15.7 on Solaris in an X86 hardware environment within our local network. The SQL Server environment is mixed versions of SQL Server on mixed versions of Windows Server with an upcoming project to update versions. This environment includes both servers in our network and in Azure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support and maintain our Sybase ASE 15.7 environment on Solaris (x86 hardware) and SQL Server on various Windows Server versions, both on-premises and in Azure.
- Operate within a formal change control environment, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
- Employ strong troubleshooting skills to resolve database-related issues promptly.
- Assist with the ongoing migration from Sybase to SQL Server, leveraging experience in both environments.
- Develop and manage CRON jobs and perform command-line tasks in a Unix environment.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, providing support for after-hours implementations and weekly data fixes.
- Collaborate with the team on clusters and disaster recovery procedures in our development, test, and production environments.
- Aid senior DBAs during implementations and reduce overall workload by taking on additional tasks.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.
Experience:
- Junior-level experience as a Sybase ASE DBA, with knowledge of version 15.7.
- Familiarity with SQL Server on Windows Server, including working with clusters and disaster recovery.
- Experience with Unix-based systems and proficiency in command-line operations.
- Understanding of formal change control environments.

Work Environment: This position is primarily on-site (two days per week) and offers flexibility for remote work.
On-Call Requirement: After an initial learning period, participation in the on-call rotation is expected. Overtime and weekend work are infrequent and require prior scheduling and approval.
