Job Summary The Chief Radiation Therapist performs responsibilities associated with the localization of tumors and the administration of radiation therapy. This individual is responsible for developing and training staff radiation therapists in new technology and in assuring patient safety protocols. Works as the clinical supervisor and also as the liaison for radiation therapy students from Upstate Medical University and must have excellent technical and communication skills.
Core Job Responsibilities - Manage and coordinate delivery of patient care for the treatment machines and CT Scanner. Plan, organize, and schedule work for the radiation therapists and delegate assignments to assure appropriate staffing levels on the treatment machines.
- Monitor and oversee the staff radiation therapist and ensure charts are ready prior to the patient's initial treatment.
- Serve as the point person for issues regarding patient care, troubleshooting the linear accelerators and CT Scanner and for the Nurses and Radiation Oncologists.
- Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards and established policies and procedures.
- Participate in chart rounds and cascade information to appropriate parties.
- Participate in physics/dosimetry meetings designed to increase communication between the areas.
- Participate in all quality initiatives and appropriately record statistics and progress.
- Act as the leader/trainer for the staff therapists for new technologies and/or new software. Ensure staff radiation therapists meet all competencies and training requirements. Orient new radiation therapists.
- With the leadership and Human Resources guidance, provide input to or make recommendations on employee hires, performance reviews, transfers, promotions, salary changes, disciplinary actions, terminations and similar actions. Resolve grievances and other staff problems in a fair, timely and consistent manner also in conjunction with HR.
- Maintain an assignment on either the treatment machine or the CT Scanner as a staff radiation therapist.
- Serve as a professional role model and mentor to staff. Promote teamwork, collaboration and customer service within the department.
- Takes occasional call as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Education/Experience Requirements REQUIRED:
- BS in Radiation Therapy.
- Graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy program with a BS degree.
- 5 years of experience as a staff radiation therapist.
- 1 year of supervisory experience.
- Strong clinical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills.
- Ability to develop relationships with patients/families/physicians/radiation therapists and other customers to foster trust.
- Proven knowledge of principles, practices and procedures involved with the operation of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment and of human anatomy/proper positioning of the patient to provide treatment as prescribed.
Licensure/Certification Requirements REQUIRED:
- Active NYS license as a Radiation Therapist.
- Current certification from the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist).
- BLS certification.
