We are looking for a full-time general manager to run the shop. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants the chance to lead a machine shop business.
We are a job shop machine shop with 6 machinists and 1 maintenance/driver/helper. We operate in a 9,000 sq-ft facility with 16 machines plus a small weld area. The machinists have above-average skills and work on projects that are above-average in complexity. There are a few customers with recurring work, but many jobs are one-off projects in small quantities. We do some repair work (in-house, not in the field) for some customers that includes assembly and disassembly. We run one shift (Mon-Fri 7am-3:30pm) with occasional overtime and Saturday shifts. On rare occasions we do emergency repair work for local customers that may include evenings and weekends.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Quoting of work for the shop including drawing review, takeoffs and material quoting, subcontract quoting and final quote generation. Multiple machinists are used to helping with quotes.
- Manage jobs in the shop including creating work packages, scheduling work, addressing problems and closing out jobs for shipment.
- Working closely with customers throughout the process from quoting to shipment.
- Hiring, development and firing of shop employees.
- Manage shop quality by ensuring jobs are assigned properly, inspection equipment is calibrated and in good order and that inspection steps are carried out diligently.
- Manage shop safety by ensuring all preventive maintenance is completed on schedule, appropriate safety equipment is available and safe practices are used.
- Driving improvements in all aspects of production, quality and safety.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of manual and CNC machining
- Knowledge of materials and mechanical systems
- Good with people (customers, vendors, employees and owners)
- Experience managing people including hiring, development and firing
- Experience with quoting labor hours and material costs
- Basic office skills including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), QuickBooks and other online tools.
- Experience managing a budget and achieving financial goals
Compensation
- Competitive salary: $110,000 to $145,000
