The Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of refrigeration systems. This role involves leading the mechanical design process, preparing design specifications, and conducting analyses to ensure the successful development of refrigeration systems for synthetic and natural refrigerants, including CO2 and propane. The engineer will collaborate with various departments and vendors to drive the optimization of refrigeration products, ensuring compliance with industry standards and manufacturability.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
Tasks may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Lead the mechanical design of refrigeration systems, preparing specifications, conducting analyses, and making recommendations that align with department goals and standards
- Design mechanical refrigeration systems for both synthetic and natural refrigerants, including CO2 (transcritical and subcritical)
- Take technical responsibility for planning, organizing, and conducting technical projects or phases of projects related to design and development
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, marketing, and sales teams to develop product design concepts
- Create piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
- Develop and maintain bills of material for refrigeration systems
- Select appropriate refrigeration system components
- Communicate design changes and requirements to relevant departments
- Work closely with vendors to obtain technical data and specifications for system components
- Design and/or redesign products to improve performance while adhering to regulatory requirements (e.g., UL, CSA)
- Ensure product designs are optimized for manufacturability and assembly
Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Skills
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical design
- Strong understanding of the practical application of engineering principles related to mechanical systems and heat transfer
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Basic working knowledge of CAD software, including AutoCAD and SolidWorks
- Experience in the HVAC&R industry

- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical skills with a focus on design optimization and compliance with industry standards
- Basic working knowledge of the SAP environment is a plus
- Knowledge of design management, including reviewing models, drawings, and Bills of Material
