Title: Animal Health Technologist
Location: Ridgefield, CT
Duration: 12 months Contract
Description:
The basic responsibility of this position is to provide veterinary health care services to laboratory animal populations under the direct supervision of an Animal Resources Veterinarian or Senior Animal Health Technologist.
Assists in preventive medicine program (in processing physical examinations, vaccinations, disease control and health surveillance programs, dental prophylaxis) and in assists in environmental enrichment program for all species.
Assists in maintenance and operation of aseptic surgical suite, including provision of pre-, peri-, and post-operative care of surgical patients, including induction and maintenance of anesthesia, pain management, fluid and antibiotic administration and wound management.
Assists in the conduct of large and small animal health rounds and communicates all abnormalities to an Animal Resources Veterinarian.
Collects specimen and submission of samples to diagnostic laboratory for analysis.
Participates in-service training and directed workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge base
Administers basic veterinary medical treatments under guidance of an Animal Resources Veterinarian.
Complies with applicable animal welfare regulations, performing all work in a safe manner, and maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs and policies.
Must be able to work on scheduled weekends and holidays and on occasion, off-hours if required.
Skills:
Ability to triage clinical cases and veterinary emergencies, identify abnormal from normal clinical presentations of various lab animal species, calculate and administer medications by various routes, operate basic veterinary diagnostic equipment, write medical records.
Working knowledge of animal welfare regulations, excellent interpersonal skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Must be proficient with MS applications and have working knowledge of medical terminology.
Education:
Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary animal health technology or equivalent program that includes a minimum of one year practical experience performing veterinary technical procedures. AALAS certification is desirable.
