Position Details
The Resource Manager at Stella-Jones is responsible for supervising and participation in the acquisition and harvesting of all utility pole raw material in the defined geographical area. This position is responsible for the volume, cost and quality of all the products produced, as well as merchandising of all related by-products.
This specific position will cover the TX and LA region. The TX/LA Resource Manager will manage three or more Forester-Buyers as well as external companies working under procurement contracts
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages all round product raw material procurement and by-product merchandising activities. Establishes and oversees programs to acquire raw material, meet budget objectives and develop barkie flow forecasts to meet production needs.
- Assures a continuous supply of raw material to meet sales and inventory goals by supervising and participating in locating, cruising, appraising and purchasing poles from various sources through direct negotiations and/or a bid process within defined pricing structures.
- Assures the quality of acquisitions by supervising and providing professional and technical assistance, information and direction to raw material sources; supervising the administration of logging and timber sale contracts; and overseeing the land management objectives of the Company.
- Develops and maintains relationships and buy/sell agreements with other timber companies providing for reciprocal supply of poles and markets for sawlogs; and seeks to develop new markets for sawlogs and wood by-products.
- Manage the wood flow for the region to each annual inventory targets by matching barkie production constraints with manufacturing and operational constraints for multiple pole peeling locations.
- Manage controlled production for the region by matching the sizes of poles produced from standing timber to the inventory targets, through purchasing, harvesting, and timber manufacturing techniques.
- Assures a staff capable of meeting corporate expectations by overseeing the selection, training, and development of resource employees. Ensures effective management, including employee safety and training programs, emergency action plans, employee motivation organization goals and objectives, planning, organizing, integrating, and measuring the work performed.
- Ensures a cost reduction program is in place to assure maintenance of a least cost raw material procurement program relative to all competitors. Has responsibility for developing the most cost efficient departmental organizational structure.
- Represents the company as its eyes, ears and first point of contact at State level industry meetings with major raw material suppliers. Participates as an active member of the field resource procurement effort, meeting with major suppliers together with resource staff. Plays a training and mentoring role with subordinates, insuring a redundancy of skills and relationships in all key areas.
- Provides accurate and updated information and recommendations regarding direct competitors, other timber industry members and related timber industry activities for forecasting and short- and long-term planning.
- Supervises and maintains records, supplies and equipment to fulfill the needs of the acquisition function.
- Contributes to the maintenance of the office functions by responding to telephone inquiries regarding barkie poles, logs and by-product sales; and corresponding and completing paperwork as needed.
- Participates and contribute to company safety program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Management duties include supervision of exempt and/or non-exempt staff. This includes but is not limited to, conducting performance evaluations and improvement plans, approving paid time-off (PTO), assigning or delegating work, providing on-the-job training, giving guidance to staff, taking disciplinary action, and interviewing candidates for open positions.

Qualifications:
- Eight (8) or more years of Forestry experience required (including significant timber cruising, timber harvesting and transportation-related work experience)
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Forestry, Forest Management, or a closely-related field highly preferred
- Management / Supervisory experience of direct reports in the Forestry industry highly preferred
- Driver’s License required

- Negotiating skills – extensive knowledge and ability to negotiate best vendor terms, pricing and budget and schedule requirements
- Knowledge of regional timber base including pole zones, pole specifications and pricing dynamics
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Solid decision making and strong analytical skills
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, or employees of the organization
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Exceptional planning and organizing skills with accuracy and attention to detail
- Proven experience in leadership and teamwork
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Suite(including Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
