California Employment Litigator - Partner or Of Counsel [No Book Required]

This unique opportunity would welcome an experienced employment litigator to join the California office of Quarles & Brady, an Am Law 200 firm. Previously a defense-side Labor & Employment boutique, Paul, Plevin, Sullivan & Connaughton joined Quarles & Brady in 2023 to better serve clients needs and expand our Southern California presence.
Regardless of your portable book size, this position is ideal for experienced California employment litigators who are looking to defend a broad range of employment cases throughout California through trial, provide excellent client service, and operate in a collaborative, team-focused environment with highly experienced colleagues. The ideal candidate will have at least 8 years of experience in employment law, defending employment lawsuits of all types, with the ability to work with limited supervision to develop case strategy, interact with clients and opposing counsel, take and defend depositions, attend mediations, and prepare for and participate in trials and arbitrations throughout California. The candidate should have a strong working knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing California employment law and California and federal civil procedure, discovery and trial practice. Class Action / PAGA and/or employee mobility experience is desirable but not required.
Responsibilities:
This role involves defending clients in legal proceedings related to California employment matters; key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Litigation
- Conduct legal research and stay up to date on relevant case law
- Develop and implement case and litigation strategy
- Draft legal documents including correspondence, pleadings, motions and appeals
- Take and defend depositions
- Oversee discovery, including use of electronic evidence
- Collaborate with clients, colleagues, and expert witnesses to develop case strategies
Advocacy and Representation
- Advocate zealously on behalf of management-side clients while maintaining high ethical standards
- Anticipate, prepare for, and attend trials, mediations, and arbitrations
- Handle matters from inception through trial, including all phases of discovery
Case Management
- Manage a caseload of employment matters, including wrongful termination, discrimination, wage & hour matters and other employment related matters.
Supervision
- Supervise junior attorneys and paralegals in litigation tasks
- Develop and maintain client relationships.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- California bar admission required.
- At least 8 years of focused experience in employment litigation.
- Strong understanding of federal and California state employment laws.
- Excellent legal research, analytical and writing skills; strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with ability to supervise associate and paralegal work.
- Ability to work directly with clients on a wide range of employment-related matters.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Benefit eligibility is dependent on hours. The anticipated salary range for California based attorneys who join with no portable business is $225,000 - $300,000+ and for those with portable business may range upwards from $300,000 to over $500,000+ with adjustments determined on transferable business, experience, education, and other job-related factors. A competitive bonus is available based on hours and/or other relevant factors.
