Duties
- Responsible for a broad range of communication initiatives for NASA’s Gateway Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) project at GRC in Ohio
- Build relationships with NASA stakeholders and provide communication support for Gateway PPE
- Handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under tight timelines and changing priorities/relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish

- Shall work with the PP&C leads and interns as appropriate to develop and produce new audience-appropriate outreach materials and content for PPE as well as maintain pre-existing outreach materials.
- Shall oversee PPE participation and support at PPE public outreach events (as a floater and/or primary volunteer)
- Shall manage all aspects of PPE’s public engagement support including the recruitment of project volunteers between PPE and the Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) project for applicable outreach events
- Shall coordinate the logistics of packing, shipment, and delivery (to and from) of PPE Outreach exhibits and collateral (handouts, stickers, banners, posters, etc…) at public engagement events
- Shall develop an information packet per public engagement event as appropriate to provide clear guidance, contact info, and instructions to the volunteers in support of the events
- Shall be the PPE liaison between the PPE project and other NASA project offices in support of any public engagement events as appropriate.
- Shall support required meetings with the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) OCOMM office to discuss, plan, reserve, and support PPE project media relations needs.
- Shall author and coordinate all aspects of the PPE narrative for the Co-Manifested Vehicle (CMV) Quarterly Newsletter (the HUB) including working with PPE Project Management (PM) to select team member features, writing up the PPE piece of the newsletter, coordinating the drafts for PPE PM approval, and submitting to CMV quarterly.
- Shall lead the expansion of PPE’s outreach program and amplification of PPE and Gateway Program’s mission through exploration of opportunities within the local GRC area (schools, libraries, etc…) for increased public engagement, in coordination with GRC OCOMM and OSTEM to ensure efforts adhere to the NASA Strategy for Communications.
- Shall support meetings at different NASA centers or public engagement events (local and non-local) as the PPE Outreach & Communications Specialist
- Shall work closely with the assigned OCOMM Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and the Gateway PAO team to coordinate, communicate, develop, review and/or share public-engagement related actions/tasks for PPE (i.e., public press releases, supplying outreach materials, answering media inquiries as guided by PAO, etc.). Release authority for media products and responses to media inquiries will remain within GRC OCOMM’s civil servant purview.
- Generate routine and/or ad-hoc reports for OCOMM management/OCOMM customers
- Directly interface with OCOMM management and/or OCOMM customers, as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, multimedia, communications, or other appropriate area of specialization from an accredited college or university
- Must have 15 years of relevant experience (to include 5 years NASA experience preferred)
- Some experience in social media management required
- Advanced oral and written communications, including writing and editing
- Proficient in AP style
- Advanced problem-solving skills
- May be required to undergo a standard background check along with verification of education requirements

The physical demands described herein are representative of those which may need to be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Employees must possess the ability to work in an office environment.
If required, employees must be able to operate a motor vehicle which may require sitting for prolonged periods of time to visit other company sites. Must have hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. Standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. This position may require an employee to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb or balance, reach, push, and pull. The employee may also be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
