WPE currently has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Substation Engineer. reporting to the Director of Substation Engineering. This position is located in our Arcadia or San Diego, CA office. We are looking for a seasoned Substation Engineer with 6-8 years of combined experience in the design of high-voltage substation projects, starting from their initial conception to providing support during construction and/or design protective relaying, SCADA, and communications for high-voltage substations. Knowledge of microprocessor relays and capable of preparing schematic diagrams. This individual interfaces with client engineering representatives and other discipline engineers within the WPE organization. May visit job site as required for exchange of information.
Key Responsibilities:
• Leading and performing engineering design on 12 kV to 500 kV substation projects from the conceptual design stage through construction
• Create single-line and phasing diagrams, layout plans, sections, ground grid layouts, and grounding details, as well as plans and details for conduit and cable routing. Compile and review lists of drawings, engineering documents, specifications, and inspection/testing plans and procedures. Create schematic diagram design, Relay selection, control panel drawings, and specifications, Bills of materials, Panel front view and wiring diagrams, Control building layouts and panel hardware specifications.
• Ability to review, create or support SCADA overview development.
• Ability to develop or understand the sequence of operation and functional description documents
• Supporting project scope creating, proposals, estimates, change notices, budgets and similar documents
• Supervising engineering expenditures and adhering to schedules through the oversight of project advancements, coordination of activities, and resolution of challenges.
• Review design documentation with the Owner's Engineer to ensure the design satisfies the project's requirements
• Examination of vendor documents in comparison to specified requirements.
• Coordination of construction and commissioning activities involving utility clients and subcontractors.
• Address information requests from construction sites and finalize project documentation, encompassing as-builts, calculations, and providing data back to clients. Travel to sites while coordinating with internal teams, external contractors, and clients through effective communication and coordination.
• Strengthen and sustain relationships with internal teams, external contractors, and clients for continued collaboration and mutual benefit.
• Take charge of projects from initial conception through construction and commissioning, which includes providing mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Working within assigned budgets and schedules.
• Relay protection settings experience (a plus)
Required Qualifications:
• Electrical Engineering Degree from an ABET-recognized university
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States
• 6-8 years of substation electrical experience in a Transmission & Distribution Utility and consulting organization designing substations
• Experience interfacing design with other substation engineering disciplines such as civil, structural
• Experience with outage planning, construction sequencing, and commissioning is considered an asset
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong understanding of regulatory codes and standards, including NESC, and ANSI / IEEE.
This position's base salary range approximation is $140K - $170K, depending on numerous factors such as applicable experience, skills, knowledge, credentials, geographical location, etc.
