The Histotechnologist works with general direction from supervisory personnel. Responsibilities include performing technical histology tasks and procedures to include tissue embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, equipment preventative maintenance, quality control, inventory, accessioning, slide scanning, and other histology related duties.
Primary Responsibilities
- Performs the duties of a histotechnologist for a specific area/section of the laboratory or rotates in all sections/areas as needed.
- Prepares tissue obtained from surgical and autopsy sources, as directed, by processing in tissue processors; embeds in paraffin; cuts sections by microtome; mounts on slide; identifies by number; stains by Hematoxylin and Eosin, or appropriate stains; dehydrates; and clears and coverslips using standard procedures.
- Performs procedures as required following outlines in procedure manuals, with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work independently within a team and strong attention to detail.
- Assures proper functioning, maintenance, and cleanliness of equipment and work area.
- Maintains all required records, logs, charts, and files.
- Prepares various required solutions as necessary following standard formulas and measurements; troubleshoots methods, procedures, and instruments as needed according to departmental procedures.
- Monitors and maintains adequate inventory for daily testing routine.
- Performs quality control using established protocols.
- Performs other duties as required or as directed.
Qualifications/Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associate Degree or successful completion of certified program for laboratory accredited by CAHEA/NAACLS AND HT (ASCP).
- Histotechnologist: Bachelor of Science degree and certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or at minimum must have 60 college credits to include twelve science credits (six chemistry; six biology).
- One year of laboratory training or experience.
- Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills.
