Job Description:
Network Engineer
Must have experience with hardware/software from Cisco, Palo Alto, or Juniper Systems.
Primary Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be responsible for router/switch/firewall configuration and security management of an environment that includes networking equipment from several different manufacturers, as well as Windows/Linux servers, databases, VMware, and security hardware & software. The network includes local and geographically dispersed LAN enclaves connected by WAN links. Responsibilities include:
- Plan and design network components/configurations to ensure resources (hardware/software) support IT system infrastructure monitoring and management.
- Engineer solutions for capacity expansion, response time improvement, and network operations streamlining.
- Monitor and analyze mission-critical networks and servers.
- Set up, manage, and maintain security management and application performance optimization functions across internal and customer systems.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide network administration support for development, deployment, and problem identification and remediation of the enterprise network environment.
- Plan and implement IT/network enhancements and undertake project work.
- Monitor and resolve network issues; communicate system outages as needed.
- Provide timely and professional support via calls and emails.
- Maintain network documentation ensuring clarity and accuracy for incident resolution.
- Support enterprise network needs, collaborating with IT service provider teams to align with LAN/WAN architecture.
- Assist companion work groups and maintain inter-departmental relations.
- Manage information assurance vulnerability alerts (IAVAs) and system security scanning in accordance with System Security Plans.
- Analyze existing network and server configurations; develop enhancement plans.
- Implement system enhancements to improve reliability and performance.
- Plan and execute system installations and upgrades (hardware and software).
- Design, test, and install new capabilities in the environment.
- Assess system change impacts and communicate updates to leadership.
- Develop and maintain technical data such as rack elevations and installation instructions.
- Provide off-duty on-call response to network, operations, and maintenance issues.
- Some travel may be required (<10%).
Basic Qualifications
- Active TS/SCI clearance with the ability to sit for Polygraph.
- Experience with Cisco, Palo Alto, or Juniper hardware/software.
- Experience in analysis, root cause diagnosis, and troubleshooting for routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Familiarity with vendor networking products (switches, routers, firewalls, etc.).
- Direct user assistance experience.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Adherence to best practices including compliance with maintenance windows and change control procedures.
- Self-starter capable of independent and team-based work.
- Ability to provide after-hours support for network administration, operations, and maintenance problems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related field; at least 8 years of related experience.
- Experience with SolarWinds or similar network monitoring applications.
- Familiarity with VMWare 7 or higher and network configuration.
- Knowledge of Cisco Nexus/Catalyst/ASA/ISR/XE, McAfee Sidewinder, Palo Alto, Juniper, IPSEC, NAT, SCP, TFTP.
- CCNA Certification, Juniper Equivalent, or Palo Alto Equivalent required.
Note: It is not a lead role but at the customer site it is essentially one-dimensional. It involves a single person on-site who is primarily responsible for gathering requirements for the engineering team, implementing the software solution, and assisting with customization for the customer.
