Job Title: Lead Engineer - Protection & Control

The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $101,400-$153,374
Job Summary
Responsible for engineering activities in electric transmission and substation system protection on AVANGRID and its owned subsidiaries: CMP (Central Maine Power), NYSEG (New York State Electric & Gas), Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), The United Illuminating Company (UI).
Ensure all protection system designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards (NESC, FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, ISO-NE, NY PSC, ME PUC, CT PUC, etc.).
Set policies, procedures, document standards, and engineering activities for electric transmission and substation system protection to ensure safe, timely, and efficient system operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Define, review, and maintain the standards and best practices for transmission and distribution substations control and automation system and design. Analyze and propose engineering solutions to improve substation networking, SCADA communication, local HMIs (Human Machine Interface) and RTUs (Remote Terminal Units), time synchronization and protection relays fast communication.
- Review and approve work of engineering contractors.
- Define, maintain, and update company processes as needed to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and regulatory authority requirements.
- Define, and update internal processes, and performance indicators.
- Audit internal company processes and support evidentiary. documentation, as needed to verify company practices, is meeting compliance requirements.
- Monitor and manage projects associated with corrective action plans.
- Act as subject matter expert during audits.
- Represent the company on regional and national committees, NPCC, NERC, and auditors.
- Serve as a mentor in the technical development of lower-level engineers and cross-department employees.
- Travel to worksites on an as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications
- 7 years of experience in Engineering or 4 years of experience in Protection & Control.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering / Technology.
- Advanced knowledge of power system analysis and fundamentals of equipment protection.
- Knowledge in communication protocols (DNP, MMS, Modbus, IRIG-B, NTP, SNMP)
- Knowledge in serial and ethernet networking (RS-232/485, OSI model, TCP, UDP, IP, VLAN)
- Knowledge of national and international standards, regulations, and compliance requirements associated with power system protection.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proficiency and fluency in power system protection theory, application, standards, design, test, commissioning, and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering preferred.
- Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain certification.
- Knowledge of FERC/NERC/NPCC and state regulations.
- Knowledge in PowerApps, PowerBI, PowerAutomate, and advanced Excel will be considered a differential.
- Business process management capabilities perspective.
- Electrical Design Experience.
