SUMMARY: Under basic supervision, performs various functions in support of the City’s electrical and natural gas distribution systems including the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and replacement of distribution system equipment, and response to electric and natural gas emergencies. Performs related duties, as required.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and replacement of the electric and low-pressure
- gas distribution system components and equipment.
- Assist in installation and maintenance of Victorville Municipal Utility Services (VMUS) high-pressure natural gas distribution system.
- Inspect, clean, and analyze all components of the VMUS electrical distribution system, including transformers, switches, PMEs capacitors, cables, connections, vaults, and enclosures.
- Perform electrical system surveys and monitoring.
- Conduct voltage checks and collect power quality data.
- Perform system checks, monitoring, and leak surveys on the natural gas system.
- Commission and de-commission new systems/equipment.
- Connect and disconnect utility services.
- Locate gas and electric utility lines and provide positive response to Dig Alert.
- Assist in meter installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and data collection.
- Respond to customer inquiries and general service calls.
- Respond to electric and natural gas system emergencies or abnormal operating conditions.
- Participate in monthly meetings on electrical and natural gas system and safety procedures and equipment training.
- Purchase materials and tools for work projects.
- Perform project construction inspections.
- Attend meetings regarding contractor coordination.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High School diploma OR GED equivalent AND two years of experience in electrical distribution system operation, natural gas distribution system operation, OR a combination of the two.
License and Certification Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California Class “C” driver’s license upon hire and maintain throughout the length of employment with the City of Victorville.
- DOT Operator Qualification (OQ) certification is required within one year of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office and primarily in a field environment. May have exposure to dangerous machinery, equipment, extreme weather conditions, gaseous environments, electric hazards, and hazardous chemicals. May be required to perform frequent pushing, pulling, twisting, leaning and sideways motions. May be required to work within confined spaces, vaults, and trenches. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Must be able to hear in the normal range, with or without correction, and stamina to work long hours and overtime if assigned. Must be able to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts. Individual will be required to arrive on-site to on-call emergencies in accordance with the department standby policy.
