Job Purpose
The Mainframe Engineer IV implements and manages IBM mainframe server hardware and software for on-premises systems. This role is responsible for the business-critical availability of production, non-production and disaster recovery site mainframe systems. Responsibilities include administration and support activities along with day-to-day maintenance including hardware, related hardware, system software, ISV software, routine automation, security, troubleshooting, training, and technical support.
Responsibility
- Performs installation, maintenance and upgrades for system software and ISV software. Maintains and supports virtual tape backup systems and libraries. Provides troubleshooting, training, and technical support for all users and projects of the organization.
- Resolves issues other tiers of support have escalated/transferred. Communicate courteously and effectively with users as needed.
- Handles the most complex issues since they are considered the subject matter expert and may mentor, coach and help develop less experienced associates, may serve as a back-up to manager when they are out.
- Responsible for the configuration and readiness of the disaster recovery mainframe site, including immutable storage systems. Participates and performs tasks in disaster recovery exercises.
- Ensures compliance with server, network, security and engineering standards and guidelines. Stays knowledgeable of emerging trends and industry practices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- Extensive subject matter expertise and team lead experience with IBM z/OS mainframe and related tools/products including LPAR configuration, MQ Series, DB2 COBOL, JCL, VSAM, CICS and mainframe ISV software.
- Experience with IBM’s file structure(s): (i.e. HFS, ZFS, and PDS’s), TSO, and DFSMS.
- Experience with IBM DS89xx disk subsystems including day to day operations, replication, flash copies and immutable staging using tools like Copy Service Manager (CSM) and others.
- Experience with networking technologies that support the mainframe, i.e. Ethernet, FICON etc.
- Experience with z/VM virtualization including zLinux installation and maintenance.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to stay focused on completing tasks and meeting goals within a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with various backup solutions and strategies.
- Ability to develop, teach and mentor other members of the team.
- Strong time-management and prioritization skills.
- Ability to communicate applicable technical subject matter expertise to management and others.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred
- Experience with virtual tape systems including Luminex.
- Experience with AIX.
- Knowledge of LAN/WAN/Firewall/VPN technologies.
- Experience with storage area networks. In depth knowledge of business continuity and disaster recovery strategies.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to stay focused on completing tasks and meeting goals within a busy workspace.
