Job Overview:
St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 380 students and 100 employees.
St. Bernard’s offers young boys of diverse backgrounds an exceptionally thorough, rigorous, and enjoyable introduction to learning and community life. We wish to inspire boys to value hard work and fair play, to develop confidence, consideration for others, and a sense of citizenship, and to have fun while doing these things. We are seeking a Spanish teacher for coverage for the months of October, November, and December 2024. The Spanish teacher should have a firm understanding of Spanish language and culture and the ability to teach both. This Spanish teacher will be expected to coordinate with the current Spanish teacher about the curriculum and student grades. The teacher will have the opportunity to provide an effective learning environment through planning, organizing, developing, and assessing a comprehensive instructional Spanish curriculum for grades 7-9. This position will include teaching three sections of Spanish in the Upper School.
Responsibilities:
- Create a positive and dynamic learning environment for the acquisition of an additional language and the understanding of different cultures.
- Develop in students an appreciation of the value of learning Spanish.
- Support students in all levels of language acquisition, differentiating instruction based on students’ needs.
- Provide consistent, timely, and constructive feedback in both written and verbal communication.
- Be willing to collaborate with teachers across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary curricula and projects.
- Cover other classes and supervisory periods when needed.
- Participate in the life of the school community through activities such as supervising a student lunch table, attending school assemblies, etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School or Division Head.
Requirements:
- Fluency and expertise in conversational and written Spanish
- A degree in Spanish or education preferred
- At least two years of experience teaching Spanish
- Ability to teach all levels of Spanish from beginner to advanced courses in literature and culture
- An understanding of learning differences and demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction in the classroom based on a student’s needs
- Strong yet relational classroom management and clear expectations for student behavior
- Eagerness to contribute to a positive faculty culture by building collaborative and respectful relationships with colleagues and by supporting fellow teachers and administrators
- Commitment to maintaining professional standards of appearance, courtesy, responsiveness, discretion, punctuality, and attendance
- Strong interpersonal skills that foster collaboration and effective, respectful communication with students, parents, and colleagues
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Working knowledge of the Google Suite of apps (Drive, Calendar, Docs, Classroom, etc.)
- Demonstrated knowledge and a willingness to participate in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging workshops and discussions to maintain alignment with the school’s Equity and Inclusion Statement

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the pro-rated salary for this position will be based on an annual salary range of $75,000 to $115,000 ($6,250 to $9,583 per month). St. Bernard’s School considers factors including as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
