Job Summary: Join our innovative Research and Development team as an Attending Veterinarian/Study Director. In this pivotal role, you will oversee the management of small and large animal colonies, lead Vivarium Operations, and ensure the successful execution of high-impact research studies. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in surgical procedures, study design, and leadership, contributing to the advancement of our research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Study Leadership & Business Acumen
- Lead and oversee research studies, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
- Serve as Study Director/Principal Investigator and mentor fellow Study Directors in study quotation and execution.
- Develop and enhance training programs for Study Directors, focusing on continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with the Business Development team to align study design and quotations with client needs.
- Ensure ethical treatment and welfare of animals in compliance with industry standards.
Surgical Expertise
- Perform and supervise complex surgical procedures, particularly on Non-Human Primates (NHP) and large mammals.
- Maintain proficiency in diverse surgical techniques relevant to research objectives.
Colony Management & Primary Care
- Supervise laboratory animal colonies, ensuring compliance with AAALAC and USDA standards.
- Develop health monitoring programs and provide primary veterinary care, emphasizing animal welfare.
Research Collaboration
- Collaborate with researchers across departments to design studies that meet business goals.
- Provide input on research proposals and grant applications, aligning with organizational objectives.
Data Collection & Documentation
- Collect and maintain accurate data related to surgical procedures, ensuring regulatory compliance.
Training & Education
- Train research staff on veterinary and surgical techniques, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Share knowledge of advancements in surgical practices with team members.
Compliance & Regulatory Affairs
- Ensure all studies adhere to relevant regulations and ethical standards, collaborating with regulatory professionals as needed.
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited institution.
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California.
- DACALM Certification preferred; Ph.D. in a relevant field (toxicology, pharmacology, biomedical sciences) is a plus.
- Extensive experience performing surgical procedures on laboratory animals.
- Strong understanding of biomedical research methodologies.
- Proven leadership skills with a focus on mentoring and team development.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced research environment.
Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years as a practicing veterinarian with a focus on survival surgery.
- At least 8 years as a Study Director or Principal Investigator in pre-clinical studies.
- Experience in research or vivarium settings, preferably in GLP-regulated environments.
