Job Title: Operating Room Circulator (OR Circulator)

Reports To: Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing
Job Summary:
The OR Circulator is a registered nurse who provides professional nursing care in the operative setting to patients undergoing surgical or other invasive procedures. The role includes ensuring the safety and well-being of the patient, assisting the surgical team, and maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room. The OR Circulator at the Knoxville Spine Surgery, LLC focuses on outpatient procedures, which allows patients to go home the same day.
Key Responsibilities:
* Preoperative Duties:
* Assess patients before surgery, including reviewing medical histories and conducting physical assessments.
* Verify patient identification, surgical site, and informed consent.
* Ensure that all necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and in working order.
* Collaborate with the surgical team to develop and implement the patient’s care plan.
* Intraoperative Duties:
* Maintain a sterile environment by adhering to aseptic techniques.
* Monitor and document the patient’s vital signs and other pertinent data.
* Assist the surgical team by providing instruments, supplies, and medications as needed.
* Ensure the accurate count of surgical instruments, sponges, and needles.
* Communicate effectively with the surgical team and other healthcare professionals.
* Postoperative Duties:
* Assist in the safe transfer of the patient from the operating room to the recovery area.
* Provide postoperative care and monitoring as required.
* Document all aspects of patient care accurately and promptly.
* Provide patient education and discharge instructions.
* General Responsibilities:
* Adhere to the policies, procedures, and regulations of the ambulatory surgery center.
* Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.
* Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
* Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the operating room.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives and infection control practices.
Qualifications:
* Education:
* Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
* Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
* Experience:
* Previous experience in perioperative nursing preferred.
* Experience in an ambulatory surgery center or similar outpatient setting is advantageous.
* Skills:
* Strong clinical and critical thinking skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
* Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation.
Physical Requirements:
* Ability to stand for long periods.
* Manual dexterity to handle instruments and equipment.
* Capacity to lift and move patients and heavy equipment as necessary.
* Visual and auditory acuity to monitor patient status and interpret data.
Working Conditions:
* Exposure to potential hazards such as infectious diseases, chemicals, and sharp instruments.
* Work hours may include early mornings, late evenings, and occasional weekends or holidays.
Performance Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated based on the quality of patient care provided, adherence to safety and procedural protocols, teamwork, and professional development efforts.
