GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) Acute Care is a skilled individual, qualified by academic and clinical education who provides assistance in the provision of specialty and acute medical care for children with a wide variety of
acute, complex acute, critical and chronic illness in the inpatient setting. The APP Acute Care – PICU and IMC will function independently, under the supervision an attending physician in accordance with a standard care arrangement and
specialty board certification. Operates in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing and/or Texas Medical Board. Maintains a Standard Care
Arrangement with a collaborating physician(s). The APP Acute Care demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills, as well as proven excellence in clinical care. The acute care unit(s) operate within the framework.

Schedule
• 24/7 coverage model (day, evening, nights, weekends, holidays)
• Flexible scheduling, required.
• Cross-coverage: Pediatric Critical Care and Intermediate Care Unit, required.

• If applicable, performs and records history and physical examinations (initial admissions and consults will be seen by
attending pulmonologist prior to implementing plan of care).
• Assist with physician-directed care including:
1) Write appropriate orders (e.g. nursing care, medication orders, laboratory and imaging/radiological examinations).
2) Review pertinent abnormal findings in the patient's history, physical examination, radiological and laboratory data
with supervising physician, obtain appropriate referral/consultation, additional laboratory or radiological studies as
needed, and initiate appropriate medical intervention(s).
3) If applicable, completes consultations approved by the supervising physician with follow-up as indicated. Ensure
testing has been completed, results verified, review labs/studies and vital signs. Complete progress notes as indicated.
4) Review of laboratory and radiologic data. Make appropriate interventions as indicated.
5) Advise supervising physician of unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis of events related to a major
change in the patient’s condition and describing corrective measures already taken.
6) Daily assessment of patient’s hospital course, write note of patient’s progress in chart as it pertains to the supervising
physician and implement indicated therapy as determined by the supervising physician.
7) Communicate with Supervising Physician, Medical Team and patient/family to establish anticipated discharge needs
and initiate discharge teaching.
8) Assists with the coordination of discharge planning and/or follow-up.
9) Serve as a resource for clinical staff.
10) Assess, perform, and document parent/patient education.
11) Participate in acute care-based service conferences.
12) Collaborate with research personnel on research projects and data collection.
13) Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSE (APRN CPNP-AC)
• Master’s or Post Master’s Degree, Required.
• Graduation from a Nurse Practitioners Program with practice authority in the State of Texas, Required.
• Minimum of 1-2 years of pediatric acute care experience, recommended.
• Bilingual (Spanish), preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION: ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSE (APRN)
• Advanced Practice Certification (any of the following)
• Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (FNP-BC)
• Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care (CPNP-PC)
✓ • Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Acute Care (CPNP-AC)
• Active and unencumbered nurse practitioner and registered nurse license in the State of Texas, required.
• Advanced specialty courses and ongoing education requirements as required by DCH.
• BLS required upon hire.
• PALS and ACLS required or must be obtained within 6 months of credentialing and privileging.
• DCH Credentialing obtained within time frame required and continuously maintained ongoing.
• Must obtain DCH credentialing as an active member of medical staff and appropriate medical privileges, required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA-C)
• Master’s or Post Master’s Degree, Required.
• Completion of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved
program (prior to January 2001 - Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs), required.
• Minimum of 1-2 years of pediatric acute care experience, recommended.
• Bilingual (Spanish), preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION: PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (PA-C)
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA),
• Physician Assistant, Certified (PA-C), required.
• Active and unencumbered license in the State of Texas, required
• Advanced specialty courses and ongoing education requirements as required by DCH.
• BLS required upon hire.
• PALS and ACLS required or must be obtained within 6 months of credentialing and privileging.
