General Summary:
The National Fleet Manager is responsible for the oversight, management, and strategic direction of a fleet of 450+ trucks spread across 30+ locations around the country. This individual will ensure fleet operations run smoothly, safely, and cost-effectively while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in fleet management and a deep understanding of logistics and transportation operations. Key responsibilities include overseeing fleet maintenance, cost management, vendor negotiations, and regulatory compliance, as well as developing strategies for optimal fleet utilization. This role also involves approving invoices, forecasting new truck acquisitions, and collaborating with teams to ensure effective fleet performance nationwide. This position IS NOT responsible for managing any company drivers.
Essential Job Functions:
• Fleet Maintenance: Manage and coordinate the maintenance and repairs of the national truck fleet, ensuring all vehicles are in excellent working condition and meet safety standards.
• Invoice Approval: Review and approve invoices related to fleet maintenance and repairs, ensuring accuracy and compliance with budgetary guidelines.
• New Truck Purchasing: Analyze fleet requirements and forecast the need for new vehicles. Negotiate the best possible deals for the acquisition of all company trucks.
• Repair Rate Negotiation: Establish and maintain relationships with repair vendors, negotiating competitive rates for services to optimize cost efficiency.
• Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed on industry regulations and ensure full compliance with safety and operational standards across the national fleet. This includes ensuring compliance with California EV Mandate (CARB).
• Cost Control: Monitor and manage fleet-related expenses such as fuel, maintenance, and insurance. Implement strategies to reduce operational costs and improve fuel efficiency.
• Vendor Management: Negotiate and manage relationships with third-party service providers, including fuel suppliers, maintenance vendors, truck dealers, and insurance providers.
• Performance Monitoring & Data Analysis: Track fleet performance metrics such as vehicle downtime, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs. Prepare reports for senior management with recommendations for improvement.
• Vehicle Acquisition & Disposal: Oversee the lifecycle of fleet vehicles, including acquisition, leasing, and disposal. Make data-driven decisions for truck purchases based on operational needs.
• Team Collaboration: Work closely with procurement, operations, and finance teams to ensure seamless fleet management that aligns with organizational goals.
Requirements:
• 5+ years of experience in fleet management, ideally with large fleets (500+ vehicles preferred).
• Comprehensive knowledge of DOT regulations, transportation safety standards, and fleet maintenance practices.
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in fleet management software and data analysis tools.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint
• Ability to develop and manage budgets effectively.
• Proven track record of reducing fleet costs while maintaining or improving operational efficiency.
• A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field (preferred).
• Certification in fleet management (e.g., NAFA, CAFM) is a plus.
• Experience with medium duty or commercial vehicles.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to work behind a screen for extended periods.
• Ability to lift 70 lbs. safely.
• Ability to climb stairs and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform routine tasks.
Travel Requirements:
• Must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time.
