Knowledge: Should have strong data orientation, appreciation and understanding of data life-cycle usage in the CPG industry. Exposure to quantitative techniques leading to customer insights, profiling, personalization, use of social media data, customer segmentation, etc. is very useful. This will ensure his/her appreciation of the role of data in support of use cases that impact business directly.
Very useful if he/she knows various external data sources used in CPG, like Market Research (industry trends, market size, consumer behavior, and competitive landscapes), Government (data related to demographics, economic indicators, trade statistics, and more. Examples include the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Department of Commerce), Trade Associations & Trade Groups (For instance, the National Retail Federation (NRF) provides retail-related data), etc.
Education: (minimum 4 yrs of education) Math with Econ or Science with MBA/Econ is very useful. The reason for math & econ is the appreciation of quantitative techniques used in CPG which are always very data driven.
Communication & Understanding Client Business: Sharp thinking, quick on the uptake, strong communicator and pick up concepts very fast. Understand technical concepts in their business context and generate hard requirements. Should be able to read technical-papers from various technology vendors and conceptually understand their technology and offerings.
