The Director of Environmental Compliance role is critical to goal of Athens Services to conduct its business in a manner protective of the environment and in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Reporting to the Senior Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability, the Environmental Compliance Director will be responsible for ensuring that Athens Services’ facilities in Southern California comply with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and standards.
This role will lead field environmental compliance specialists and help to ensure field operations achieve and maintain environmental compliance. The Environmental Compliance Director will also assist the Sr. Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability with interacting and communicating with governmental agencies, including as inspections, reporting, permitting, and other required compliance measures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee environmental compliance, including SWFP(e.g., TPRs, RCSI), SB 1383, WDRs, air quality, storm water permitting, hazardous materials business plans, pollution prevention, spill plans and release reporting, and local agency conditional use permits, and provide environmental compliance support for Athens Services solid waste facilities;
- Oversee field environmental compliance specialists and support the Sr. Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability;
- Develop, administer and improve environmental training programs, including monitor completion rates, effectiveness, and delivery of training;
- Develop, oversee, and improve field environmental compliance activities and measures.
- Collaborate with operations to integrate environmental programs into business operations and to ensure compliance with legal requirements and company environmental policies and procedures;
- Conduct routine site visits of facilities to verify compliance and ensure corrective actions are implemented, as needed, within required timeframes;
- Provide subject matter expertise on environmental matters related to changes, modifications, and expansion of operations and business processes;
- As directed by the Sr. Director, interact and coordinate with governmental environmental agencies, including LEAs and CalRecycle, on behalf of facilities;
- Provide technical expertise, guidance, and leadership to implement remediation programs;
- Provide construction project support during design, construction, and post-construction;
- Direct and assess sampling and laboratory analyses of waste and other materials, including compost feedstocks and products, liquid inputs, septic pond and land farm, wastewater clarifier waters, food waste slurries, and storm water runoff;
- Provide guidance on HHW handling and load checks;
- Review product safety data sheets (SDS) to determine safe handling and exposure for workers;
- Oversee and implement environmental compliance and management audit programs to identify improvement opportunities and program gaps.
- Provide subject matter expertise for contract preparation, in collaboration with Legal, for consultants and contractors; and
- Support other projects and tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 10 years of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience in solid waste industry preferred, with at least 5 years supervisory experience.
- Relevant environmental compliance experience with landfill or compost facility is required.
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements.
- Familiar with emission control device compliance.
- Experience with interpretation of product safety data sheets (SDS) to determine safe handling or exposure for workers.
