POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is in the Legal Audit Unit and supports the legal bill review program, as well as other initiatives to manage the cost of outside legal defense and coverage counsel.
The Litigation Counsel will manage litigation defense spend through the review of defense and coverage counsel invoices and other vendors performing work related to the underlying defense and coverage of environmental and mass tort claims. The review will be performed using multiple databases, excel, and pdf to ensure compliance with Resolute Guidelines as well as contractual or court ordered obligations.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Reviews law firm bills applying standards of reasonableness, necessity and efficiency, compliance with company guidelines and/or cost share agreements submitted in both paper format and electronically.
- Participates in periodic reviews and updates of company litigation guidelines and bill review protocols to ensure that the company continues to employ industry best practices.
- Completes work according to timeline and prioritization expectations.
- Review of settlement agreements, coverage in place agreements, contractual agreements, and jurisdictional requirements to ensure compliance with account needs in the bill review process.
- Assists the VP of Legal Audit implementing and ensuring compliance with Resolute billing guidelines.
- Assists the VP of Legal Audit in identifying litigation and billing trends and potential opportunities for expense control.
- Report results of bill reviews to law firms and claims personnel.
- Evaluate requests for reconsideration for supplemental payment.
- Collaborates with internal account managers/team leads and external co-carriers/outside counsel regarding joint defense group issues/audits.
- Collaborates with different business units and within Legal Audit in joint account administration.
- Negotiates and resolves billing issues and conflicts with internal claims staff and external law firms/non-legal vendors.
- Prepares analysis/reports regarding audit findings for executives as needed.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

- Professional written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrate effective relationship building, decision making and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Thorough understanding of General Liability Litigation and insurance coverage issues
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to learn and use different technology; previous experience using electronic billing systems
- Attention to detail
- Licensed attorney in at least one state
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Juris Doctorate
- 3 years minimum in Litigation or Legal Audit
