Position Summary:
The Director of Engineering will lead and manage the engineering and design teams, drive innovation in every area of the construction pipeline, and ensure that our structural designs exceed industry standards. This position is second in leadership, reporting only to the CEO and Board of Directors, and serving as a mediator between all subsidiaries to guide projects from concept to completion in a positive and effective way. It requires both strategic leadership and hands-on engagement, ensuring that our engineering and design efforts lead the industry in innovation while focusing on the end goal: building a better community for ourselves and future generations. This role offers substantial growth potential, limited only by the individual’s ambition.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Development:
- Lead and Mentor: Directly guide the engineering and design team while providing support for the construction, and R&D teams, fostering innovation and professional growth. Set clear goals and ensure alignment with company objectives.
- Performance Management: Establish performance standards and provide regular feedback to drive team success.
Strategic Planning & Execution:
- Innovative Design: Lead the design and execution of concrete 3D printing projects, traditionally built projects, and explore other innovative methods of building - ensuring compliance with industry standards and pushing technological boundaries.
- Project Management: Oversee all project phases, ensuring on-time, on-budget delivery while optimizing resources across multiple initiatives.
- R&D Leadership: Drive research and development efforts to advance 3D printing technologies and construction automation.
Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance:
- Structural Integrity: Ensure all designs meet safety and quality standards, with a focus on concrete structures and material selection.
- Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to engineering standards and building codes, with a particular focus on Colorado PE licensure.
- Documentation: Develop and enforce engineering documentation standards to support scalability and knowledge transfer.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Architectural Integration: Work closely with architectural teams to ensure seamless integration of design and engineering.
- Interdisciplinary Coordination: Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams to deliver cohesive, integrated project solutions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary contact for engineering matters, effectively communicating technical concepts to clients and the Board.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation:
- Process Optimization: Continuously refine engineering processes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality.
- Innovation Leadership: Stay ahead of industry trends, champion a culture of innovation and drive the adoption of new technologies.
Technical Expertise:
Comprehensive Structural Design: Expertise in the structural design of various materials, including concrete, steel, timber, and composite structures, ensuring safety, durability, and compliance with industry standards.
Concrete Structural Design: Advanced expertise in the design and analysis of reinforced and pre/post-stressed concrete structures, including intricate knowledge of concrete mix designs, curing processes, load distribution, and the latest reinforcement techniques. Experience with complex elements such as shear walls, slabs, beams, and foundations, particularly in optimizing designs for both traditional and 3D-printed concrete applications.
Software Skills: Proficient or willing to quickly gain proficiency in CAD software: AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools; experienced in using FEA for stress and load assessments across different materials.
Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of building codes and standards (IRC/IBC, ACI, ASCE) relevant to both traditional and 3D-printed structures.
Integrated Systems: Expertise in integrating MEP systems within structural designs to create cohesive and efficient project solutions.
R&D Leadership: Hands-on experience with R&D initiatives, particularly in construction technology, automation, and emerging structural design techniques.
Technical Documentation: Proficient in developing and reviewing precise construction documents, ensuring alignment with design intent and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or related Engineering fields. A Master’s degree is preferred but not required.
Experience:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Colorado, or the ability to obtain Colorado licensure through comity, within a short timeframe.
- Willingness to obtain PE licensure from the rest of the states as we expand our standalone design and engineering services.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional engineering experience, with a focus on residential and commercial structural design.
- Strong preference for candidates with expertise in concrete structural design.
- Experience in leadership and team management roles.
Skills:
- Proficiency in architectural design concepts and familiarity with MEP engineering principles.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in 3D printing, automation, or advanced construction techniques is a significant advantage.
- Ability to live within 2 hours of Chaffee County, CO, with a commitment to commute or relocate.
- Strong desire to lead, mentor, and continuously learn across all aspects of construction.
