Job Summary: We are seeking a Remote Heavy Civil Estimator with proven experience estimating projects for Caltrans. The Estimator will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for heavy civil infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, earthworks, and other public works. This position requires a deep understanding of Caltrans standards, bidding processes, and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Estimating: Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for Caltrans and other heavy civil infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, roads, grading, and utility work.
- Bid Preparation: Review bid documents, plans, specifications, and related project information to develop competitive and compliant bids for public and private projects.
- Quantity Takeoffs: Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for all aspects of the project, including earthwork, grading, utilities, paving, and structures. Utilize industry-standard software for accurate calculations.
- Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination: Solicit and review quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring all costs are accounted for and aligned with project requirements and specifications.
- Caltrans Compliance: Ensure all estimates and bids meet Caltrans requirements, standards, and specifications, including adherence to the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Greenbook) and other relevant guidelines.
- Cost Analysis & Value Engineering: Analyze project costs and propose value engineering options to optimize project efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining quality and compliance.
- Risk Management: Identify potential risks, challenges, and opportunities related to project scope, site conditions, and project execution. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and ensure accurate cost projections.
- Market Research: Conduct market research to stay informed on current pricing trends for materials, labor, and equipment in the region, ensuring all estimates are based on up-to-date information.
- Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to develop accurate estimates. Participate in project handoffs to ensure a smooth transition from preconstruction to project execution.
- Change Orders: Assist in preparing change order estimates and negotiating pricing with clients and subcontractors as needed during the project lifecycle.
- Technology & Software Utilization: Use industry-standard estimating software such as Heavy Bid, Bluebeam, or other relevant tools to create and manage estimates. Maintain an organized database of historical costs for future reference.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of [X] years of experience in heavy civil estimating, specifically with Caltrans or similar public works projects.
- Strong knowledge of Caltrans bidding processes, specifications, and regulations.
- Experience with quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, and bid preparation for large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in construction estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid, HCSS, PlanSwift, Bluebeam) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project).
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to develop accurate, competitive estimates.
- Familiarity with public works contracts, environmental regulations, and permitting processes.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Knowledge of local subcontractor and supplier markets in California.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites for occasional site visits and pre-bid meetings (as required).
