The Opportunity: Director, Health, Safety & Environmental
The Port of Virginia - Virginia International Terminals is seeking a Director, Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) to lead about 2,500 union and non-union members through the rollout and embedding of a foundational behavior-based safety program. This individual will supervise and audit the Hazard and Critical Risk elimination/mitigation program at all VIT Terminals, as well as monitor OS&H regulator, environmental and POV SOP Compliance. This individual will also function as the head of Health, Safety & Environmental in the absence of the department’s VP.
What You'll Do: Responsibilities
- Perform Risk Assessments and develop controls for all critical risks in collaboration with the functional departments.
- Monitor and perform trend analyses on the evolution of POV’s safety culture by training, coaching and enforcing behavior-based safety best practices.
- Constantly research technology and innovative ways to protect workers from hazards and to proactively use them to prevent the erosion of engineering controls that have been implemented to protect workers.
- Mentor, Coach and seek training opportunity for junior HSE< Operations and Maintenance colleagues to help them become more proficient in their jobs.
- Lead accident investigation and root cause analyses of critical incidents or mishaps that had the potential of being critical incidents.
- Lead the assessment, prioritization, tracking, and resolution of all reported hazards for the enterprise-wide operations, maintenance, and motor-carrier functions, including leading working groups to develop technical and procedural solutions.
- Collaborate very closely with Risk Management, Workers Compensation and Environmental Teams to develop a more synergistic action plan for HSE.
- Communicate regularly with Operations, Maintenance and Repairs and Engineering to maintain alignment with those departments.
- Go anywhere on the terminals to work with any employee or investigate mishaps, including climbing ship-to-shore cranes, climbing straddle carriers, boarding vessels, working in all parts of the rail operations area, working with employees on all areas of the dock, working with motor carriers and equipment operators in the transfer zones, and working in all areas of the maintenance facilities.
- Ensures compliance with all security and environmental regulations and policies within work area at all times. This includes properly addressing issues through action or reporting matter and concerns to Manager.
- Other task and assignments as directed.
Who You Are: Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- 10 years in Maritime/Logistics experience required. 5 years within a Health, Safety & Environmental management capacity required.
- CSP, ASP, or Merchant Marine licensure preferred.
