The Material Handling Engineering Manager position will support our customer, the United States Postal Service / Engineering Systems, by improving and optimizing support infrastructure focused on material handling engineering, maintenance policies and practices, and engineering support for mail processing and distribution centers. Postal retirees with associated backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Preferred location is Merrifield, VA (USPS Engineering HQ).
Essential Functions:
- Collaborates with clients, engineers, and other staff to understand the specified material and the conveyance, transport, or other handling needs.
- Evaluates current material handling process, considering innovations in material and methods.
- Recommends improvements to ensure most efficient and cost-effective handling and packaging procedures.
- Drafts sketches, samples, and written analysis of proposed designs or improvements to handling system, packaging, and other related elements.
- Estimates material needs, costs, and timelines for proposed projects.
- Facilitates installation, testing, and debugging phases of projects.
- Coordinates work with and deliveries from outside vendors.
- Drafts, or assists with drafting of, relevant technical documentation, user manuals, and lists.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
- Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Industrial Engineering, or relevant area of specialty.
- 10+ years of experience in engineering.
- Experience using MS Office Suite software (Word, Excel, and Access) and specialized software.
- Experience with CAD software (Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD).
- Additional Requirements: Candidate must be able to sit, stand and work at a computer for prolonged periods.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours when needed.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check & drug test.
- Travel is required.
