The Culinary Services Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the kitchen including meal planning and preparation, food purchasing, budgeting and supervision of kitchen staff and volunteers. Coordinate activities of the kitchen and dining room staff to ensure that residents are served properly and in a timely manner and oversees all aspects of the kitchen. Responsible to arrange for cleaning and maintenance services for the equipment and facility to comply with health and sanitary regulations. Must have an Active SERVSafe Food Protection Manager certification in Maryland in order to apply.
Typical schedule is Monday – Friday; day shift hours, however, schedule may evenings and weekends.
Must be flexible with schedule to serve needs of the program.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Maintains and monitors kitchen operations to ensure compliance with health and fire department regulations.
- Plans menus daily and weekly utilizing SignUp Genius and prepares meals for the shelter residents.
- Responsible for shopping, purchasing food and maintaining inventory of items. Regular inventory control and performing physical inventory/rotation.
- Schedules meal volunteers.
- Reports maintenance problems to appropriate staff and decides for needed repairs.
- Training, and managing food service employees.
- Scheduling employee work hours to ensure that all shifts are adequately covered.
- Completing payroll and maintaining employment records.
- Ensuring that residents are served quality food in a timely manner.
- Regularly inspecting all work areas to ensure compliance with food health and safety regulations.
- Submitting all receipts on time to Accounting or supervisor
- Reporting cleaning and maintenance services including trash removal, pest control, deep cleaning, and equipment maintenance, as needed.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Acknowledges volunteer efforts.
- Capable of performing the duties of all kitchen position
- Anticipates, identifies, and corrects any issues with inventory, systems, and staffing.
- Assists in the implementation and management of kitchen policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Agency-wide Responsibilities:
- Participates in supervision, in-service training, and staff meetings.
- Maintains good working relationships with co-workers and positively contributes to group morale.
- Completes all administrative duties including time sheets, leave requests, etc.
- Participates in special task forces, committees, or special projects as needed.
- Uses appropriate channels of communication to resolve conflicts with other staff.
- Interacts with staff, residents, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Serve Safe – Food Protection Manager Certification is required.
- At least two years food management/food preparation experience required.
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of food management and food handling practices.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
Skills and Abilities:

- Spontaneous supervision of staff in real-time.
- Ability to work with food volunteers.
- Able to provide nutritious meals using donations from the community.

- Computer skills with various software and the internet.
Work Conditions:
- Requires standing for long periods of time.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required.
- Overnight travel is not required.
- Hours are flexible to meet program needs.
- Use of personal vehicle for work related activities (reimbursable mileage).
