The Federal Defenders of Montana, Inc., the community defender organization serving the State and District of Montana, is soliciting applications for the position of Federal Defender Investigator. The organization is a nonprofit corporation, funded by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, which provides legal representation and criminal defense services to individuals charged with federal crimes who are financially unable to retain counsel. The Federal Defenders of Montana, Inc., is not an agency of the federal government; staff members are not federal employees.
The Investigator will be assigned to the Missoula Branch office. At the direction of the Federal Defender and/or the assigned Assistant Federal Defender, duties will include: evaluate police reports, records and data; locate and interview victims, witnesses and law enforcement personnel; recreate crime scenes by measuring, photographing, videotaping, sketching and/or computer depiction; establish and maintain working relationships with agencies, groups, courts and individuals that interact with the organization or may provide information; and prepare and type reports as required. The position requires considerable resourcefulness and creativity. Extensive travel in connection with the responsibilities of the position should be anticipated.
At least three years general experience and three years specialized experience is required; federal criminal defense and/or violent crime experience is preferred. Applicants must have a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university, a valid driver’s license and auto insurance. The successful applicant must successfully complete all of the requirements for licensure by the Montana Board of Private Security (Private Investigator) before or immediately after commencing employment.
Salary & Benefits. Competitive salary ($72,553 - $122,198), health coverage, and retirement plan.
