POSITION SUMMARY:
The M&P Engineer will act as first response for all production related issues pertaining to materials and processes. In this role, the engineer will serve as the subject matter expert for mechanical testing in the quality assurance laboratory, research materials and processes for new and current design, support the production and the purchasing department with shortage issues, and act as liaison between engineering and production.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide support to the Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineering department in the following capacity:
- Evaluate and select industry technical specifications and economic factors relating to material, process, or product design objectives including regulatory compliance. Develop and maintain specifications as necessary to define Type Design.
- Support Design and Production by determination of appropriate methods for fabricating, inspecting, fastening, and joining materials. Review new product and improvement plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design, manufacturability, and cost objectives.
- Function as focal point for investigation of materials, processes, procedures, products, or components that fail or do not function as intended, to develop root cause.
- Represent engineering in Material Review Board (MRB) process of nonconformance resolution.
- Plan and implement laboratory operations and tests on raw materials or finished products to develop material and fabrication procedures, define design allowables, performance limitations, or to ensure their quality.
- Act and produce innovative solutions and exhibit resourcefulness in new materials and processes to modernize Piper with industry practices.
- Act in a mentoring capacity to entry-level engineers and interns.
- Experience with chemical processes such as alkaline washing, metal etching, structural bond priming, adhesive bonding, material flammability, exterior paint systems, and laboratory testing methods is preferred.
- Experience with 14 CFR Part 23 FAA regulatory requirements is preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and at least seven years of production experience, preferably in aircraft manufacturing, as a Material and Processes Engineer. Microsoft Project and Office computer program literacy are required to perform the duties of this position. Candidates must be highly self-motivated with an aptitude for problem-solving. An individual technical report shall be provided upon request to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to communicate technical information in a self-contained written document.
