Construction Engineering Inspector Level II (CEI)

Reports to: Construction Administration Manager
Job Summary: A CEI Inspector provides inspection services on construction projects to ensure contractors are performing work safely and in compliance with all project plans and NCDOT standards and specifications. CEI Inspectors maintain detailed records of construction operations and testing and report directly to NCDOT personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Construction Site Inspection:
- Conduct regular on-site inspections to monitor construction activities.
- Verify that work is performed according to approved plans, specifications, and standards.
- Inspect materials, construction techniques, and equipment for compliance with regulations and quality standards.
- Identify and report any deviations, defects, or non-compliance issues.
- Ensure the quality of workmanship and materials used in the construction process.
- Perform tests and measurements to validate that materials meet required specifications.
- Monitor concrete pours, asphalt placement, earthwork operations, erosion control compliance and other critical construction phases.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, test results, and compliance documents.
- Prepare comprehensive inspection reports outlining findings and recommendations.
- Document any changes or modifications made during construction and ensure they are properly approved.
- Work closely with NCDOT staff and personnel as well as construction site superintendents to resolve construction-related issues.
- Participate in construction progress meetings to provide updates on inspections and address concerns.
- Ensure construction activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Monitor safety protocols and promote a safe working environment for all construction personnel.
- Report safety violations and work with the project team to implement corrective actions.
- Communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
- Provide clear instructions and guidance to construction teams regarding necessary corrections and improvements.
Qualifications and Skills:
Relevant certifications in construction inspection:
- ABC Sampling Technician
- Borrow Pit Sampling Technician
- Chemical Stabilization Subgrade/Bas Technician
- Concrete Field Technician (NCDOT)
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field Testing Technician Grade 1
- Conventional Density Technician
- QMS Asphalt Roadway Technician
- 2 years previous experience in construction inspection or related roles.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and observational skills.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions based on inspection findings.
- Familiarity with construction software and tools used for documentation and reporting.
Working Conditions: CEI Inspectors typically work on construction sites and may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. They might need to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate construction schedules and deadlines.
CEI Inspectors are instrumental in ensuring the successful completion of construction projects by upholding quality standards, safety protocols, and compliance requirements. Their expertise contributes significantly to the overall integrity and safety of the built environment.
