Beginning with the iconic Chicago Daily Law Bulletin® in 1854, we have steadily grown our business-critical and award-winning content. Law Bulletin Media is a diversified information company serving the legal, real estate and financial markets. We are seeking a Temporary Copy Editor to help out our CDLB Editorial Department. The working schedule will be full time, Monday- Friday.
The Temporary Copy Editor will handle daily news copy editing, headline writing and social media for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, along with other tasks as required. Meticulous editing skill is a must; They will handle complex material daily and on deadline, including reported pieces about Illinois law and the Chicago legal community, contributed columns from legal experts, and legal case summaries and studies. Experience in legal editing is not required. The Temporary Copy Editor will learn and ultimately ensure that copy maintains high-level, smart content in a way that is also readable and lively. They will ensure consistency and best practices across newspaper production, newsletters and digital and social media. The Temporary Copy Editor will handle similar tasks for Chicago Lawyer magazine during its production cycle, currently six issues per year.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCTATION:
- A bachelor's degree or higher, with a major or minor in journalism.
THIS ROLE MIGHT BE FOR YOU IF...
- You have had prior experience working as an editor, associate editor or assistant editor for a minimum of two years
- You have had prior experience working in a newsroom environment where deadlines are priority, and a fast-paced work cycle is the norm
- You have had experience working for daily publication.
- You have a background in covering courts or in legal writing.
- You have had experience working as a staff reporter for a news organization.
SKILLS:
- Ability to meet deadlines is a must.
- Must have mastered AP style
- In-depth understanding of grammar and basic knowledge of storytelling and writing. This includes subject-verb agreements, passive voice vs active voice and punctuation use
- Attention to detail. Must be able to spot inconsistencies, inaccuracies, errors, typos and holes in a story
- Ability to write crisp news headlines and able to rewrite to fit restrictive print formats on a tight deadline
- Ability to spot the most important element in a story and rewrite the “lede” if it’s buried
- Ability to comprehend complex legal topics and rewrite legal jargon to make it more understandable
- Proficient computer skills. Should have experience with Microsoft Office applications. Photoshop experience is a plus
- Familiarity with navigating content management systems (GN4 familiarity a plus). Some familiarity with basic code is a plus
- Ability to communicate with reporters and other editors in a newsroom chat, such as Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to write social media posts to promote content is a plus
- Regular attendance
- Edit articles for magazine and newspaper, including writing strong print and digital headlines; checking for factual, grammatical and style mistakes; and trimming stories as needed.
- Demonstrate strong news judgment for issues of interest to local legal community
- Stay up to date and perform best practices in digital journalism presentation
- Proofread pages for newspaper and magazine.
- Assist newspaper and magazine editors as needed in gathering or assembling information and digital editor in website management
- Other duties as assigned to meet business needs
