Building Construction Inspector
Under general supervision, inspects building construction, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical installations; performs plan checks, inspection, and testing of new airport terminal construction.
Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To:
- Examines plans, blueprints, and specifications for commercial buildings and structures.
- Performs field inspections to determine compliance with applicable codes and laws relating to new and existing construction.
- Inspects complex structural systems made of various building materials, including concrete, masonry, steel, timber, glass, and composite construction.
- Inspects complex and special occupancies, construction types, life safety features (fire and smoke protection systems), means of egress, and accessibility.
- Conducts inspections of structural, architectural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, green building, and energy building components.
- Utilizes inspection software and field hardware, such as handheld computer devices, for daily duties.
- Uses current communications software and devices to perform job functions.
- Prepares reports using standard office software applications, including Microsoft Office.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
- 5-10 years of experience as a journey-level, lead person, or superintendent in building construction work.
- Alternatively, three years of building inspection experience for a public agency or large commercial projects.
- Any combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of:
- Current codes, laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations related to building construction.
- Standard practices, current methods, and materials used in building construction.
- Principles and techniques of inspection work.
- Office software applications like Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Ability to:
- Read and interpret construction blueprints, plans, and specifications.
- Understand and make building construction computations.
- Perform effective inspections and recognize non-conforming construction practices.
- Organize and present thoughts clearly and tactfully in both written and oral forms.
- Keep records organized and updated.
Special Minimum Requirements:
- Possession and retention of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is a condition of continued employment in this classification.
- International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Commercial, Electrical, Mechanical, or Combination Inspector is desirable.
