JOB SUMMARY:
The role will be responsible for performing research and development activities related to the processing of beverages within the Pilot Plant. The Pilot Plant Technician will be conducting trials for new product development and optimization of processes following established protocols and work plans. This position is responsible for the proper maintenance of processing equipment and analytical instruments and ensures compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). The individual in this position will also diagnose and troubleshoot problems with processing equipment and analytical instruments.
MAIN JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Conduct hands-on research utilizing various processing equipment within a pilot plant to develop new or existing solutions.
2. Assist with the development of product labeling and packaging.
3. Assist with the operation, assembly, and disassembly of pilot plant equipment.
4. Assess equipment processes and make recommendations for improvements in areas such as affordability, quality, and/or sustainability.
5. Understand food safety requirements and ability to perform risk assessments.
6. Lead equipment sanitation activities with capability to inspect following sanitation.
7. Understand maintenance, electrical, and controls with a technical focus.
8. Handle basic issues and problems under direct supervision regarding plant and facilities processes, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.
9. Participate in product tastings and collaborate with R&D teammates to design superior product formulations.
10. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
BS in Food Science or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3-5 years experience in low acid beverage manufacturing.
Experience with homogenization and pasteurization preferred.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
Ability to perform maintenance on machinery including diagnosing and solving mechanical problems. Must be proficient in sensory evaluation techniques and methodologies and have experience conducting and analyzing consumer tests, discriminative tests, and descriptive analyses with a strong understanding of various beverage products’ flavor, texture, aroma, and visual attributes. Participation in sensory testing for dairy and beverages with functional ingredients such as caffeine is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position works in an office and laboratory environment. Exposure to fumes, dust, or other airborne particles. Working near moving mechanical parts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires frequent sitting, use of hands, talking, hearing/listening, tasting/smelling, standing, walking, bending/stooping, climbing stairs/ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
