Job Title: Medical Malpractice Paralegal
Job Overview: We are looking for a highly organized and detail-oriented Medical Malpractice Litigation Paralegal to become part of our team. The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in medical malpractice cases, including reviewing medical records, drafting legal documents, and assisting throughout the litigation process. You will collaborate closely with attorneys, clients, medical experts, and other legal staff to facilitate case management, discovery, and trial preparation. This position demands strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to manage a fast-paced caseload.
Key Responsibilities:
- Case Management: Support attorneys in managing medical malpractice cases from initial stages through trial or settlement.
- Document Preparation: Draft and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, subpoenas, summaries of medical records, and other litigation-related documents.
- Medical Records Review: Collect, organize, and analyze medical records to extract pertinent information relevant to the case.
- Discovery Support: Aid in preparing discovery materials, including interrogatories, document requests, and depositions.
- Medical Expert Coordination: Communicate with medical experts to obtain opinions, reports, and deposition testimony. Schedule consultations and assist in preparing expert witnesses for trial.
- Client Interaction: Maintain regular communication with clients, providing case updates, gathering information, and assisting in trial and deposition preparation.
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research related to medical malpractice issues, standards of care, and relevant case law to assist attorneys.
- Trial Preparation: Organize trial binders, exhibits, and witness lists, and help with trial logistics, including attending trials when necessary.
- Case File Maintenance: Keep case files updated, including correspondence, court filings, medical records, and expert reports in both electronic and physical formats.
- Calendar Management: Monitor important deadlines, court dates, depositions, and appointments to ensure all timelines are adhered to.
- E-Filing: Electronically file documents with courts and agencies as needed.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies, or a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program.
- Experience: At least 8 years of experience as a Litigation Paralegal, with a minimum of 6 years in medical malpractice litigation.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of medical malpractice law, medical terminology, and litigation procedures.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in legal case management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and e-filing platforms. Familiarity with medical record review platforms is a plus.
- Research Skills: Ability to conduct legal research using platforms like Westlaw or LexisNexis.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with attorneys, clients, and medical experts.
- Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail, capable of efficiently managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Problem-Solving: Aptitude for identifying legal and procedural issues and assisting attorneys in resolving them during the litigation process.
- Team-Oriented: Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment and work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with trial preparation and providing support during trials.
- Background in working with medical experts and conducting thorough medical records reviews.
- Certified Paralegal (CP) or Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) designation.
