Position Purpose
Responsible for providing professional legal support including research, drafting legal and business communications, filing preparations, and general file management. Manage assigned projects, interact with internal clients and outside counsel, and carry out, interpret and analyze legal research.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities
- Case Management: Handle the day-to-day administration of all claims, lawsuits, litigation, and filings including investigation of claims and litigation holds. Partner with third-party administrator on claims/cases where applicable. Manage case calendars, deadlines and court dates. Create new matters in case management platform. Review and approve or reject attorneys’ fees invoices and ensure consistency with outside counsel policy.
- Legal Research: Conduct legal research and factual investigation to support case preparation, including reviewing case law, statutes and regulations.
- Discovery Management: Gather information responsive to discovery requests and draft responses to discovery.
- Communications: Maintain communication with internal business clients, witnesses, and outside counsel and assist in scheduling meetings, interviews, and depositions.
- Third-Party Subpoenas: Respond to third-party subpoenas including redacting responsive documents where appropriate.
- Governance: Draft minutes of board and committee meetings, prepare meeting notices and agendas, as well as unanimous written consents to approve certain actions in lieu of meeting.
- Special Projects: Manage projects and workloads of medium to difficult complexity.
Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree in paralegal studies. Bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certification preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years minimum experience as a paralegal or legal clerk in a law firm or corporate legal department handling complex litigation legal matters.
- Skills: Strong research, writing and organizational skills. Familiarity with litigation procedures and court rules. Proficiency in legal research tools (e.g. LexisNexis, Westlaw), case management software and litigation hold platforms. Familiarity with employment law preferred. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to Detail: Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in handling legal documents and case files.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact independently with internal business clients, attorneys, and other third parties.
- Problem Solving: Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and work under tight deadlines.
